Meta Closes Multiple Studios, Lays Off Staff

Meta is reducing its focus on gaming and has announced layoffs affecting around 10% of the team working on its Reality Labs projects, according to a New York Times report on Monday.

One day later, and it appears that those layoffs have begun with a number of studios being hit.

Reality Labs is where Meta’s Oculus Studios is located. Oculus Studios oversees the teams and studios that create games specifically for Meta Quest VR headsets.

Layoffs have affected two game studios: Twisted Pixel Games and Sanzaru Games. Designer Andy Gentile announced on Twitter that he was among those let go, and stated that it seems both Twisted Pixel and Sanzaru Games have been completely shut down.

Ray West, a senior designer at Sanzaru, revealed on LinkedIn that Sanzaru Games, along with several other game studios owned by Meta, has been closed.

He described the team as incredibly talented and expressed how much he enjoyed getting to know his colleagues.

Just before recent layoffs and studio closures, Twisted Pixel Games launched Deadpool VR for the Meta Quest 3. They previously worked with Sanzaru to create the popular games Asgard’s Wrath and Asgard’s Wrath 2.

TopMob has contacted Meta to ask about the number of jobs affected and which studios were impacted by the recent layoffs. We will update this article if we receive a response.
