As a long-time gamer and VR enthusiast, I’ve been following the development of Meta Quest headsets with great interest. The original Quest was a game-changer for me – it brought wireless, sensor-free VR into my life, offering an immersive experience that felt like science fiction. Since then, I’ve upgraded to the Quest 3, and I’m consistently impressed by the improvements in graphics and performance.

Based on recently unearthed intel, it’s rumored that Meta’s upcoming Virtual Reality headset, the Meta Quest 5, could hit the market in 2026. The leak additionally shed light on some features of the next-level Meta Quest Pro model.

The Meta Quest has outshined its virtual reality headset rivals since its debut, mainly due to its wireless capability that lets users play games or explore VR worlds without external sensors or cables. Although the initial Meta/Oculus Quest didn’t match the power of tethered models, its convenience was a game-changer for many gamers. Over the years, the system has gone through enhancements, boosting performance and graphics; the latest addition is the Meta Quest 3. However, Meta isn’t resting on their laurels – they’re already planning the future upgrades for this successful device series.

A recent report from The Information reveals that there will be two versions of the upcoming Meta Quest 4 VR headset. One is referred to as the “standard” model, known internally as Pismo Low, while the other is called the “premium” model, named Pismo High. As of now, no details have been disclosed about their features or how they will surpass the Quest 3.

Simultaneously, there are rumors that Meta is working on a new version of the Quest Pro, referred to as La Jolla, due for release in 2027. Previous reports indicate that this model may offer a more advanced resolution than the current device, with a per-eye resolution of around 1920×1800 pixels. Additionally, it is said that La Jolla will retain the battery placement at the back of the headset, which has been praised by some users for enhancing stability and comfort during use.

Meta’s Plan for the Quest Headsets Before the Quest 4

In 2023, Meta released the Meta Quest 3. It might come as a shock to some that three years could pass before we see another upgrade. This could be due to the rumored launch of the Meta Quest 3S, which may take over from the Meta Quest 2 in stores. According to earlier reports and leaks, the Meta Quest 3S will have a lower price point than the current model, with fewer features like resolution to reduce costs. However, it’s expected to outperform the Meta Quest 2 in terms of specs, making it an appealing upgrade without requiring a large financial commitment towards the Meta Quest 3.

Before Meta makes an official announcement, VR fans should approach leaked information with a healthy dose of skepticism. Meta has recently shifted its focus towards AI, and as a result, some of the rumored headsets may be abandoned or have their launch dates altered.
