Konami has announced that the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in the Master Collection Vol. 2 won’t include its original multiplayer mode. Metal Gear Online, which was part of the 2008 release of Metal Gear Solid 4, had its servers shut down in 2012 and won’t be available in this new version.
After nearly 18 years as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, Metal Gear Solid 4 is finally coming to other platforms. Konami announced during a February 12, 2026, presentation that the game will be included in Master Collection Vol. 2, alongside Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear: Ghost Babel. Many fans believed MGS4 would remain exclusive to the PS3 forever, so this news is a welcome surprise. The game will be available on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch on August 27, 2026. However, not everything from the original release will be included in this new version.
Metal Gear Solid 4’s Re-Release Will Not Feature Multiplayer
Konami has confirmed that the upcoming Master Collection of Metal Gear Solid 4 will not include the online multiplayer mode, Metal Gear Online. While players used to enjoy 16-player competitive matches with various game modes, Konami decided against the significant effort required to revive the servers and integrate it into this collection. The company likely considered how many players would actually return to the game and remain active long-term, and ultimately chose to focus on the single-player experience for this release.

As a big Metal Gear fan, I was really hoping for some multiplayer action with this new collection, and it looks like I won’t be totally disappointed! While we’re not getting the multiplayer from MGS4, Konami has confirmed that Peace Walker will have co-op missions for 2-4 players, and a Versus Ops mode where up to six of us can play together. It’s a bummer there won’t be crossplay, but Switch and Switch 2 owners can play together locally, which is cool. Honestly, while Metal Gear Online would have been awesome, it doesn’t feel like a dealbreaker. It’s still going to be fantastic to revisit these two classic Metal Gear Solid games!
While some players will be disappointed to learn that Metal Gear Solid 4 won’t have multiplayer, this re-release still offers a lot to enjoy. The updated version features improved graphics with a higher resolution and smoother frame rate, plus players can customize the controls. Pre-ordering the collection unlocks a special in-game item – the Cardboard Camouflage – for Metal Gear Solid 4. After much speculation, the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol 2 is finally confirmed, and it’s great news for fans. This collection will likely be the best way to play these classic Metal Gear Solid games, especially for those who missed them when they were originally exclusive to the PlayStation 3.
