As a lifelong metalhead and FPS enthusiast who’s spent countless hours slaying digital demons to the rhythm of heavy metal, Metal Hellsinger VR has been an exhilarating journey that’s had me headbanging and shredding my way through the netherworld. The fusion of metal music with intense, beat-synced combat is a symphony of carnage that I simply can’t get enough of!
I was really excited when Metal Hellsinger VR was announced, and now that I’ve had a chance to play it, I can say that battling demons in hell while grooving to an awesome metal soundtrack has been a lot of fun. There have been some technical hiccups that prevented me from experiencing it at its best, but overall, the VR version of this Doom-inspired FPS is still quite impressive. With a variety of enemies to vanquish and music that caters to various metal subgenres, it’s definitely worth checking out how they managed to transition this game to virtual reality.
In this game, you traverse various levels of hell, eliminating demons using an array of weapons such as swords and shotguns. The key is to time your attacks with the rhythm of the music, as doing so increases the damage you inflict and allows you to hear more of the song. Each instrument gradually adds to the melody until the vocals begin. Hearing Alissa White-Gluz or Serj Tankian join in as you annihilate the most wicked creatures from hell not only feels fulfilling, but also makes you feel like a badass. The music serves as an exceptional soundtrack for this intense experience.
In Metal Hellsinger VR, the graphics appear slightly less sharp compared to the original version, with textures not being as crisp. This isn’t a major issue, but it is noticeable, even on the Meta Quest 3. Another concern I had was that the hit indicators didn’t feel as impactful as they could, making it unclear at times if you’re hitting the beat correctly, since you only realize this when the music picks up. Lastly, the reloading mechanism for weapons in VR requires a different action compared to the original game. While I appreciate the developers trying new things in VR, I prefer having a simple button press to reload instead.
Despite occasional melodramatic sounds, the gameplay remains essentially the same. The numerous obstacles and differing levels of challenge test your skills to the max, and Metal Hellsinger VR is highly reactive to your actions. It creates a sensation that you’re face-to-face with these monstrosities in the very heart of hell, and this immersive experience stays consistent all through. Coupled with the voice acting of renowned gaming personalities like Jennifer Hale, you’ll be enthralled by the narrative from start to finish. It might not be perfect and can occasionally feel a bit cheesy, but if you simply embrace it for what it is, you’ll never fail to smile at this unabashedly action-packed game. It delivers everything you need for a fantastic time.
If you’ve previously experienced Metal Hellsinger in its non-VR format, you might not feel an immediate need to delve into it again in VR. However, if you’re a fan of metal music and first-person shooters, there are still numerous enjoyable aspects to discover while playing it this way. Despite some challenges with the adaptation of gameplay from its original release to virtual reality, these issues should not deter you from having a good time.
Experiencing Metal Hellsinger VR is electrifying and thrilling, offering an impressive collection of tunes to accompany your battle against hordes of demons. Although it has a few minor technical glitches, this VR version brings a unique twist to the original game, boasting one of the best soundtracks in gaming history.
