Metaphor: ReFantazio: Best Armor, Ranked

As you journey through multiple lands aiming to claim the throne in the metaphorical realm of Refantazio, you will encounter various equipment options for your hero and their companions.

Just as important as collecting accessories that enhance abilities or provide passive benefits, having strong weapons and armor is equally vital if you aim to face off against the most challenging foes and bosses during the final stages of the game.

Not joking at all, the conclusion of Metaphor is incredibly tough, more so when considering the Dragon Trials and the complex, multi-stage final boss encounter in the main plot.

I’ve compiled a customized collection of top-tier armor and equipment, which I believe could give you an advantage and potentially let you conquer challenging boss battles effortlessly.

Because the selection of truly excellent “armor” gear is limited, we’ve added a few ‘equipment’ items as well, as they share similarities with armor and serve a comparable function.

10. Orichalcum Mail

Basic But Gets The Job Done

Beginning with the least remarkable option from the given list, encountering something described as Orichalcum may evoke a sense of intrigue when found within a Final Fantasy game, yet in the realm of Metaphor, this association conveys a somewhat lackluster impression.

During my preparations for the final battle on the Skybound Avatar, I found the Orichalcum Mail in the armory stores.

Or: I stumbled upon the Orichalcum Mail at the armory while getting ready for the penultimate fight in the Skybound Avatar.

Or: In my preparations for the near-final battle on the Skybound Avatar, I discovered the Orichalcum Mail in the armory inventory.

While there are other Orichalcum equipment pieces like the Helmet and Leg Armor, they all share a common trait: they boost endurance and offer robust defense, but lack any additional special features.

While it may not be extraordinary, feel free to use it as an extra gift to a party companion. There are definitely superior choices available.

9. Pure White Shoes

Weakness Counteract 101

The spotless white shoes offer various benefits, particularly assisting in minimizing potential weaknesses among your team members when you transform into any chosen armor.

A quick reminder: refrain from using the Crimson Split Shoes against the Redscale Dragon, since any defense mechanism you have against its attacks may instead trigger a lethal instant attack directed at you.

As a seasoned gamer, I’d often outfit my character Eupha with an accessory tailored to compensate for her vulnerabilities. Notably, this item proved invaluable during boss encounters when they unleashed relentless, multi-strike elemental assaults.

8. Yggdrasil Crown

Strengthens Your Mental Fortitude

Consider putting this equipment on Junah, as it synergizes well with her role as a Masked Dancer, boosting her magical abilities. That said, feel free to assign it to any character that suits your playstyle best.

From time to time, I’d leave her on Eupha mainly because she served as a healer and also to ensure she could counter any potential mental afflictions that bosses might inflict upon me.

Additionally, because of its scarcity and renown, the Yggdrasil Crown remains useful throughout the game stages, even though it doesn’t offer significant stat boosts.

7. Divine Light Gloves

Strengthens Your Physical Fortitude

As I wield the Yggdrasil Crown, my mind remains untroubled by any mental afflictions. On the other hand, my Divine Light Gloves seem to bring about the very physical status ailments they’re meant to protect against. Yet, there’s an unexpected bonus: these gloves also grant me a powerful boost in strength!

By the point you acquire these gloves, you likely won’t encounter many foes associated with these afflictions. However, this option remains superior due to the extra statistical advantage it offers compared to the previously mentioned one.

It’s best to employ this item exclusively during boss battles where you anticipate the application of those specific status effects. However, it remains an excellent armor accessory for characters like Hulkenberg in other situations as well.

6. Kaiser’s Pickelhaube

Tailored For The Strongest Joe

In your journey through the last dungeon of the game, known as the Tyrant’s Star, you may come across the Kaiser’s Pickelhaube – a unique item to be found along the way.

As a devoted admirer, I must admit there’s one area where improvement could be made: the Archetypes provided are primarily centered around physical attacks, such as the Knight and Berserker. This might just be perfect for Hulkenberg or Basilio, given their potential to capitalize on the stat enhancements associated with these combat styles.

Additionally, the armor and equipment we’ve mentioned earlier provides a significant boost in defense compared to others, which makes it an obvious choice to equip someone with it prior to taking on the final battles.

5. Knight’s Last Stand

When You’re Down But Not Out

In simple terms, The Knight’s Last Stand is quite clear from its effects, and it proves particularly beneficial during boss battles. This powerful ability can be found within the Skybound Avatar dungeon, primarily due to this very purpose.

This item provides a reasonable boost to defensive abilities. If you’re searching for the ideal character to utilize it, Hulkenberg would be the prime candidate, primarily because of her exceptional endurance stat while on the Knight Archetype bloodline.

One standout moment for me was when she managed to bring someone back to life during a late-stage Dragon Trial boss battle, which is definitely worthy of being included in my top five favorite moments, akin to Knight’s Ultimate Standoff.

4. Cardinal Dragon Armor

A Dragonslayer’s Best-Friend

One of the three armor sets you obtain after completing the dragon challenges is the Cardinal Dragon Armor, and it drops from each challenge for a significant purpose.

To successfully withstand the strongest attacks from every dragon, particularly the Devourer of Flames, it’s crucial that you have a bonus effect for suppressing fires on your side.

As a devoted SMT player, my selection of this particular choice might seem clear-cut to many, but for those in doubt, it’s all about the power it packs – the ‘strength’ stat. This feature, quite simply, makes it an ideal fit for the Prince Archetype in our protagonist’s role.

In other words, since Archetype’s Royal Slash is a physical attack, it’s clearly an advantageous move against our main character (MC), given the minor increase in strength it provides.

If you’re using Strohl and wish to arm him with a potent item, consider using it on him, particularly for the Redscale Dragon Secret boss battle in NG+.

3. Hero’s Cuirass

A Heroic Boost To Every Stat

When you believed Metaphor couldn’t possibly shower you with more legendary treasures, it surprises you with an armor upgrade, enhancing your stats by a remarkable 5 points.

Remember, if you have the Radiant Crystal trinket on your character (granting +8 stats), this effectively adds 13 extra stat points to your existing ones, as some of these were already elevated due to the Prince Archetype.

There’s an improved version of this item coming up, but that doesn’t diminish the fact that the Hero’s Cuirass remains one of the game’s armor options.

2. Reverent Crown

A Crown Fit For The True King

In order to use the Reverent Crown effectively against the final boss, it is crucial that you first train nearly all character classes, or Archetypes, of the protagonist to a high level of mastery.

If you aim to achieve the Platinum Trophy, you’ll inevitably have to fully develop each character type, so acquiring this should not present any difficulties, in all honesty.

Here, the impact is clear-cut and requires no further clarification. Remarkably, when you pair this with the Prince’s Hero’s Cry skill, it potentially grants your team an advantage by gaining control of up to five turns on their behalf.

With Heismay and his Royal’s Archetype’s fully upgraded passive skill in play, the final boss can be severely weakened. However, the cherry on top comes from gaining an additional turn marker for your entire team whenever you use this equipment piece.

1. Great Sage’s Thwab

Has Everything You Need

Previously, I told you about an improved version of the Hero’s Cuirass? Let me now draw your attention to something equally impressive: The Great Sage’s Vestment.

The significant distinction lies in the noticeable 30% MP stock, making it advantageous as it caters predominantly to magical character types.

Here’s a fun fact: You can obtain this item from the Disgraced Ruins, a place we previously talked about in relation to the Pure White Shoes. This means it’s one of the rare and prized armor items!

If you find yourself needing an alternative for your protagonist, this armor could be an excellent choice for characters similar to Heismay or Eupha, given their roles as black mages within the Summoner Archetype.
