As a seasoned adventurer who’s battled my fair share of fearsome foes, I must say, the Icebound Dragon Sogne is one of the toughest beasts I’ve ever faced. But fret not, dear reader, for I’m here to guide you through the icy wasteland and emerge victorious!
In the imaginative adventure called “ReFantazio,” you’ll find colossal creatures and leaders guarding dungeons, making one pause before venturing in. It’s hard to dispute that the most challenging adversaries have been strategically placed towards the end of this game.
In this adventure, it isn’t until after spending a fair amount of time that you encounter a boss fight that feels like scaling a real mountain, and for me, that significant challenge was Sogne The Icebound, Rella’s dragon. You’ll face him at the Mage’s Academy.
This upcoming boss battle is an excellent preparation for Metaphor’s final stretch. However, to advance and engage in the royal duel against Louis, you must master the techniques required to outsmart this relentless, icy adversary.
When Do You Face Sogne The Icebound
The boss won’t be a concern for the player until they complete the Relic Ceremony in Altabury Heights.
After the entire event concludes, your Skyrunner abilities as a runner will be activated, allowing you to visit distant locations.
It turns out that Rella wants to meet us at the Mage’s Academy located deep in the mountains. The journey there will take a day, and upon arrival, we’ll be on the brink of facing this dangerous adversary. Therefore, make sure you’re well-prepared before departing your carriage.
How to Prepare For Sogne The Icebound
In the upcoming battle against Sogne, you’ll find that this formidable adversary possesses several distinct abilities, making the encounter more complex than just employing fire magic. To avoid being outmaneuvered by this massive dragon, here are some strategies I recommend:
- While it won’t carry you all the way through this battle, you will want someone who can perform strong fire-based attacks, so the Masked Dancer, Summoner, Mage, or General are good options.
- Sogne, turning their first phase, will eventually put up an elemental guard that will render most magic useless. So it’s vital you have a physical damage dealer. The Berserker is a must-have party member for this reason.
- Much like the dragon fights in the Dragon Temple, this Dragon can clear debuffs consistently, so don’t lead with any party members specializing in this approach.
- Consider furthering Brigetta’s Bond, as this will allow you to purchase Igniters that allow you to cast Almighty Magic, making this phase with their elemental guard much easier.
- Try to bring along items that can cure the Frozen Status. Almighty Panaceas are ideal, but running a healer with Patra or a Summoner with Summon Noctiluca works well if you’re not flush with cash or items.
- Consider running physical attackers like the Knight, Gunner, or Warrior archetypes, which provide synthesis attacks that apply one-time weaknesses to physical attacks.
- Consider running the General Archetype, as their Shelter Formation skill is ideal for quickly bolstering the party’s defenses.
How To Defeat Sogne The Icebound
The thing you should know first and foremost is that this boss fight is split into two stages, and the first stage is by far the hardest of the two.
Initially, aim to inflict maximum damage right away, but from the second round onwards, it’s crucial to adopt a more tactful and protective approach.
Here’s a breakdown of each step in our battle plan to ensure you’re well-prepared for taking down this dragon:
Phase One
To clarify, at the beginning of the battle, Sogne the Icebound employs a technique known as Quartz Wall. This protective barrier functions as a shield against any elemental assaults.
Since it’s your turn first, consider launching an immediate attack to seize the advantage straight away.
In a manner that aligns with expectations, Sogne exhibits vulnerability towards fire magic. Consequently, it is advisable to initiate your most potent fire-infused assaults using this tactic. If you’re playing as a Mage, Summoner, or General, you should have the opportunity to unleash some incredibly powerful Synthesis attacks.
Since you can swap party members at half the cost of a regular turn with a specific bond ability (which you should possess by now), it might be beneficial to use the Faker character during your initial turn, allowing you to gain extra turns.
If you play your strategy well, you could reduce approximately one-third of the dragon’s vitality in the first round. But be prepared to adjust your approach drastically after that point. From then on, it would be wise to prioritize physical attacks and reinforce them with protective enhancements for defense.
In this stage, The Berserker is the best choice for inflicting damage due to their ability to execute potent physical attacks that temporarily weaken specific physical damage types. Moreover, they possess a Charge skill which amplifies one of these attacks to deal immense damage.
During this phase, it’s crucial to effectively use defensive buffs, and I strongly suggest utilizing the General for this purpose. The Shelter Formation ability enables you to shield all your party members at once and swiftly move them to the back line simultaneously.
Instead, this strategy enables you to dodge the full brunt of damage, and at the same time, launch attacks from your position without putting your fellow party members in harm’s way when it’s your turn.
In summary, ensure that at least one of your team members possesses the ability to utilize Almighty Magic, as it can bypass Sogne’s protective elemental barrier during this stage.
As a gamer, I’ve found that the General character type can unleash the mighty Megidola spell. Or, if I want to expand my magic arsenal, I can grab an Igniter from Grand Trad market, which grants any of my team members the power to cast Almighty Magic.
To safeguard yourself from Sogne’s assaults, be mindful of attacks from both Rella and Sogne during the initial phase.
Rella has two options for her spells: She can unleash a powerful Almighty spell that strikes everyone in the group, or she can use potent Light Magic attacks capable of piercing through any Dark-type characters with special abilities.
Concerning Sogne, their primary magic source will predominantly be ice-based, capable of causing frostbite. Additionally, they can employ a range of boosts and penalties. They may amplify their own attack power or utilize a Roar ability to decrease the stats of all party members by two levels each.
In this scenario, Rella poses minimal danger, whereas Sogne certainly does. The reason being, Sogne’s Frostbite ability hinders your capacity to unleash potent Synthesis attacks, and their debuffs significantly prolong the battle beyond what’s desirable.
Instead, consider including a Character with Healing or Summoning specialties, capable of dispelling negative statuses and debuffs from your teammates in your group.
As a gamer, let me tell you, when it comes to battling those tough foes, nothing beats having Almighty Panaceas at your disposal. They’ve got this amazing power to thaw out your entire team, giving you the perfect opportunity to strike back!
Continue using both divine and physical strikes against the boss, and persistently whittle it down. Eventually, you’ll progress to its second phase.
Phase Two
The second phase initiates once you deplete the dragon’s health entirely for the initial time. At that moment, Rella transfers her powers to the dragon, restoring all its health.
Overcoming this hurdle may appear daunting currently, but here’s some encouraging news: The challenges ahead in the second phase are less steep and offer a more tactically clear path since Sogne will no longer have the shield of their Quartz Wall to rely on.
This implies that you can adjust your team composition and focus on using fire spells for your attacks once more, which should rapidly deplete their health bar.
In the initial phase compared to the subsequent one, the main distinction lies in the dragon’s actions. Specifically, during the second stage, the boss will unleash an ability called Draconic Wrath, significantly boosting its attack power. This transformation makes the dragon a formidable opponent regardless of your team composition.
Essentially, during the commencement of the second phase, the contest turns quite intense, almost like a brutal boxing match, with both sides aiming to inflict maximum harm as swiftly as possible.
In this phase, focus primarily on synthesizing attacks for maximum effect. Leverage the extra quarter-steps you gain by exploiting their vulnerabilities, and don’t hesitate to use uncommon resources to maintain your offensive advantage. Remember that their Frostbite can be quite debilitating at times, so be prepared to adapt accordingly.
Brace yourself, game on! If I can keep my cool against this fire-breathing beast, the throne could be mine, with Louis hot on my heels. Here’s to the battle ahead, wish me luck!
