As a seasoned gamer and avid fan of both Atlus and Game of Thrones, I must say that Metaphor: ReFantazio has managed to seamlessly blend the best elements from both worlds into an immersive, dark fantasy RPG experience. The political intrigue, shocking plot twists, and mature themes have all been expertly crafted to keep me on the edge of my seat throughout the game.
The following contains spoilers for
Metaphor: ReFantazio
and
Game of Thrones
.
At last, the eagerly anticipated new Intellectual Property from Atlus, dubbed as the metaphorical equivalent of Metamorphosis: Fantasia, has arrived! It carries on the classic foundation of the Persona series while introducing a fresh tale for gamers to follow. Unlike the Persona games, which are set in contemporary Japan, Metamorphosis: Fantasia is based in a medieval fantasy realm, leading to darker themes and a more mature storyline.
In Metaphor: ReFantazio, it’s evident that its character influences stem from Atlus games, which isn’t surprising. However, its narrative and writing appear to take cues from the world of Game of Thrones. This influence is most noticeable in the game’s political machinations and somber undertones, but its storytelling style and mature visuals also echo that of Game of Thrones. Consequently, while Metaphor: ReFantazio shares the same art style and introduces updated versions of several Persona gameplay aspects, it sets itself apart from the Persona series in some ways.
Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Game of Thrones Influences Are Clear
Metaphor: ReFantazio is Chock-Full of Political Intrigue
In essence, “Game of Thrones” unfolds with intense political maneuverings marked by shifting allegiances, power grabs, treachery, deceit, and relentless ambition. The fundamental storyline of this series is largely driven by politics, as characters stop at nothing to achieve their goals. Similarly, the concept behind “Metaphor: ReFantazio” revolves around a politically volatile world steeped in tribal biases, with a struggle for the throne of Euchronia following the demise of King Hythlodaeus V.
In the tale of Metaphor: ReFantazio, we begin with the assassination of King Hythlodaeus V by Louis Guiabern. Notably, the presumptive heir to the throne had gone missing over a decade ago during an assault on the royal palace. With no clear successor, the throne was now open for contention. This scenario bears a striking resemblance to that of Game of Thrones and the Iron Throne, particularly after King Hythlodaeus V’s demise awakens “the royal magic,” igniting a power struggle for the throne’s inheritance where every citizen of the realm is a potential claimant.
Like Game of Thrones, Metaphor: ReFantazio Features Surprising Plot Twists
In the realm of captivating storytelling, much like myself as a devoted fan, ReFantazio echoes Game of Thrones through its shocking plot twists and untimely demises. Remember when we dared to hope that Ned Stark might find mercy in the first season of Game of Thrones? Alas, our hopes were cruelly dashed as Joffrey sentenced him to death in a startling and heart-wrenching moment. This is where Game of Thrones truly shines, leaving us attached to characters only to snuff them out suddenly with little warning or buildup.
Metaphor
accomplishes something very similar at the end of its prologue.
In the prologue of Metaphor: ReFantazio, players meet Grius fairly quickly. He’s endearing from the start, though a bit rugged in his demeanor. Beneath that rough exterior, however, lies a golden heart, yearning to safeguard those he cares for. Regrettably, he meets an untimely end while trying to confront Louis, resulting in a grisly death scene filled with blood. There’s a fleeting moment of optimism that Grius might not be truly gone, but as days pass, it becomes evident that his departure is irreversible.
Although there are just a few likenesses between ReFantazio and Game of Thrones, it’s the shared tone, ambiance, and narrative devices that hint at Game of Thrones’ impact. This demonstrates not only Game of Thrones’ powerful influence but also the progression in storytelling within video games.
