Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Leon Strohl Has a Tragic Backstory

Characters in role-playing games often have tragic pasts, shaping their identities. Leon Strohl de Haliaetus, for instance, was born as the Count of Halia’s son, a village situated amidst Eucronia’s northern hills. However, his history reveals that the experiences he encountered have significantly molded him into the person we see in the game’s narrative today.

Seven years prior to the storyline of “Metaphor: ReFantazio”, on the initial Flamesday of June, the town of Halia was reduced to ashes. Initially, it appears that a human was responsible for the destruction of his village, causing Halia to react strongly and with fear whenever humans or the game’s main character interact during the prologue. However, it is later revealed that Captain Klinger permitted this human to wreak havoc through Halia, as he acknowledged the danger but chose not to confront the monster. Consequently, the village was destroyed, with seemingly no survivors – except for Leon Strohl.

After discovering the truth about his past from a comment by Captain Klinger, Strohl comes to realize and embrace his Warrior Identity.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Leon Strohl Exhibits Characteristics Befitting a Hero

Beyond his heart-wrenching past shaping his identity, Leon Strohl showcases numerous endearing traits typical of a hero. To start, he harbors an unwavering passion for justice, a drive likely fueled by the experiences of his past. Although born into nobility, he chooses to hide this aspect and treats everyone impartially. Remarkably, Leon holds the protagonist of ReFantazio in high regard, as this character belongs to the Elda Tribe, a group ostracized and discriminated against by the Sanctist Church due to their alleged “dangerous magic.

Leon Strohl shares similarities with Clive Rosfield from Final Fantasy 16, as both are characterized by their kind-hearted and compassionate nature. They become agitated only when they encounter injustice, their innate empathy stirred by the sight of suffering or unfair treatment meted out to those who do not deserve it. However, when called upon, Strohl demonstrates remarkable strength and leadership, bravely advocating for his beliefs and shielding those in need. Though he encourages the protagonist to take charge at times, Strohl often steps into a leadership role, doing so in a manner that is neither domineering nor vainly self-assuming.

Metaphor: ReFantazio’s Leon Strohl Has One of the Best Archetypes

Strohl also makes use of one of ReFantazio’s top Archetypes effectively in its early stages. Upon introduction, the party gains an advantage from Leon’s Warrior Archetype, which often inflicts more damage on enemies than many others, particularly at the start of the game. In fact, Leon’s Warrior Archetype abilities tend to deal higher damage compared to some others throughout most of the game.

As a dedicated gamer, I can wholeheartedly say that Leon Strohl is hands down the most captivating character in the game “Metaphor: ReFantazio.” Emerging from a heart-wrenching past, he stands tall as a beacon of kindness, compassion, and unwavering courage. He’s the one who sacrifices everything for those he cherishes. Among all the remarkable characters in this game, Leon Strohl truly steals the show, leaving an indelible mark as the standout star.
