Meta, the company behind Facebook and Instagram, reported that its virtual reality efforts lost over $19 billion last year.
So, things have been pretty crazy over at Meta lately. They announced a while back they were pulling back from gaming, and that meant layoffs – about 10% of their Reality Labs team got the axe. We all heard rumors that the Harry Potter VR game and the Batman Arkham Shadow sequel were canceled because of it, and now we’re finding out just how much money they’ve actually lost trying to get into the gaming world. It’s a big hit, and it explains a lot of the recent changes.
Meta Faces Heavy Losses Across VR Division
A recent TechCrunch report shows Meta’s virtual reality division, Reality Labs, lost $19.1 billion in 2025, a significant increase from the $17.7 billion loss in 2024. The fourth quarter of 2025 accounted for $6.2 billion of that loss. Looking ahead, Mark Zuckerberg stated that Meta will prioritize investments in “glasses and wearables” for the Reality Labs division.
As a big Meta fan, I was really excited to hear the CEO talk about their plans! They’re doubling down on Horizon, their VR world, and are determined to make it huge on mobile devices. Basically, they want to finally make virtual reality a money-maker. He was honest about the fact that they’re still expecting to lose money this year, but he thinks 2025 will be the worst of it, and things will start getting better after that. If you want to read everything he said, you can find the full statement linked below.
Looking ahead, Reality Labs will primarily focus its investments on developing glasses and wearable devices. We’re also working hard to make Horizon a popular app on mobile devices and build a sustainable, profitable virtual reality ecosystem. We anticipate Reality Labs will continue to experience similar financial losses this year as last year, but we believe this represents the highest level of loss, and we expect to see those losses decrease over time.
