Metro Awakening review

As a seasoned gamer with years of gaming under my belt and a soft spot for immersive narratives, I must say that Metro Awakening has left me utterly spellbound. Having delved deep into the Metro series before, I was already familiar with its unique blend of horror, suspense, and post-apocalyptic survival. But this VR adaptation takes the experience to a whole new level.

I absolutely adore the Metro series of games, and the prospect of stepping into that universe filled me with immense excitement. Arizona Sunshine by Vertigo Games is remarkable, but Metro: Awakening offers a unique take on the first-person shooter genre. It’s meticulous, tense, and intense. The gameplay is immersive and lifelike, but what truly makes Metro: Awakening stand out is that you’re just an ordinary individual. You’re not a battle-hardened soldier accustomed to handling weapons, and the perilous world around you is genuinely terrifying. It raises the question of how far you’d be willing to go to protect the one you love, and in this case, you might find yourself pushed to the edge of your mental limits to secure their safety.

Metro Awakening begins with a more subdued pace, allowing you to familiarize yourself with the metro station and its labyrinthine tunnels, acquaint yourself with the people nearby, and comprehend the situation involving Serdar’s wife. You, as a doctor, are on a mission to find your missing spouse and her medication, making your journey through the metro an absolutely chilling ordeal. The majority of locations are shrouded in darkness, where the lingering dread of these mysterious creatures lurks in every shadowy corner. Brace yourself for tense moments as this fear is a constant companion throughout the story. From the very start, I found Serdar to be endearing, his ordinary nature making him relatable and easy to connect with initially.

Metro Awakening review

Metro Awakening is certain to thrill fans who appreciate its rich narrative and storyline. Dmitry Glukhovsky is an exceptional storyteller, and if you’ve enjoyed both his novels and the prior games, I believe you’ll find the story captivating. From start to finish, I was hooked, and despite the numerous difficulties, each new plot development kept me eager to continue playing and endure the intense and frightening moments that come rapidly. It will undoubtedly be intriguing to see people’s reactions once it is released.

Occasionally, it seems there’s no hope left, especially when resources are scarce and you’re battling the terrors of the underworld to stay alive. Radiation looms as a constant threat, and fear of death is always present. Each move in this chilling thriller must be calculated. I was drawn to the feeling of hopelessness it evokes. Typically, we play characters that are powerful killing machines, but here survival feels truly earned. That’s why Metro Awakening can be challenging at times. You’ll encounter some truly terrifying entities that attack from all sides, making caution essential when exploring each area.

Throughout his journey, Serdar relies on various tools, one of which is his trusty power bank that serves multiple purposes such as powering his headlamp and charging switch panels. By turning its handle, it generates electricity, and the more energy accumulated, the brighter the lamp becomes. Navigating through the dimly-lit metro, Serdar must frequently decide whether to stop and recharge or continue onward towards safety, often in perilous and darkened areas. Light proves vital yet requires constant effort for the reassurance it offers in the form of flickering illumination.

In this game, you’ll find a gas mask requiring its filter change, which can be done with a medical syringe, but remember to replace the vials after each use. Additionally, there are various homemade weapons at your disposal for taking down enemies, however, the ammo needs to be switched out once a clip is exhausted. Unlike other games, it doesn’t show how many bullets you have remaining, so in critical moments, you might find yourself without ammo as danger approaches, tearing through you mercilessly. This can be annoying, but it contributes to the game’s sense of realism and constant tension that pervades throughout your journey.

Metro Awakening review

In this game, Metro Awakening, it’s amazing to see how a dark environment is brought to life so effectively. The level of detail in the surroundings of the character Serdar is truly impressive, and I was consistently amazed by the sense of liveliness in the world. The character design is superb, and as you start to encounter the ominous creatures lurking beneath the earth, you find yourself both wanting to flee and taking a step back at how visually stunning it all is. The lighting in the game plays an essential role, creating an illusion of safety while also making you question what’s real and what’s not.

Metro: Awakening isn’t just an excellent VR game; it significantly enhances the broader narrative of the Metro series. The backstory of Khan and the captivating manner in which the plot unfolds keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the acting is commendable. Although the authenticity of reloading and maintaining your torch might be frustrating in areas filled with tunnel-dwelling creatures, I was consistently amazed by how Vertigo leveraged that realism to deliver thrilling gameplay that pushes you to endure. Immersing myself within this universe and witnessing the story unfold leaves me delighted to know that there’s still a strong passion for the Metro universe.
