Recent discoveries about the game’s packaging indicate that *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* will heavily feature time travel, impacting both its story and how you play. This looks like the game will finally fulfill a goal set by producer Kensuke Tanabe over a decade ago.
The fourth *Metroid Prime* game initially started development with Bandai Namco, and Kensuke Tanabe-who had produced all previous *Metroid Prime* titles-returned as producer. However, Nintendo wasn’t happy with how things were going, so they restarted the project with Retro Studios, keeping Tanabe on board. Even before the game’s development was rebooted, Tanabe had suggested a unique idea: instead of having many planets to explore, he envisioned a single planet with a focus on time travel and the ability to alter the timeline. He shared this concept with Eurogamer back in 2015.
Metroid Prime 4 Box Points to Samus Crossing Space and Time
It looks like a promise made ten years ago is finally coming true. Photos of the Japanese game box surfaced in September 2025, and a fan translation suggests the new title will send Samus across space and time to the planet Viewros. Once there, she’ll need to use new abilities to find her way back. Viewros was briefly mentioned in earlier *Metroid Prime 4: Beyond* promotions, but this is the first indication that time travel will be a key part of the story.
Tanabe initially planned for *Metroid Prime 4* to involve time travel, but a lot has changed over the past ten years. The game went through a major reset with a change in development teams. Despite all that, recent details about the game’s packaging hint that the core idea of a time-traveling story might still be part of the new *Metroid Prime* game.
Sylux Is Returning In Metroid Prime 4

The idea of time travel isn’t the only element from Tanabe’s original game design that’s still relevant today. In a 2015 interview, the game developer also mentioned Sylux as an unresolved character after *Metroid Prime 3: Corruption*. Recent trailers for *Beyond* show that this powerful bounty hunter will indeed be returning in the new game.
The new Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is scheduled to launch on December 4th. It will be available on both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2. While the Switch 2’s more powerful hardware will allow for a smoother experience, both versions of the game will have the same content.
