Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Had the Help of More than 20 Studios

After a long wait, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is finally available! It’s been 18 years since the last main Metroid Prime game, and Nintendo originally announced this new title eight years ago. The game faced many delays and changes during development, and it ultimately took the combined effort of over 20 different studios to complete it.

There’s been a lot of buzz surrounding the release of Nintendo and Retro Studio’s new game. While reviews for Metroid Prime 4 aren’t quite as strong as previous installments, it’s still getting positive feedback, especially considering fans have waited nearly ten years for it after a long period of development. Whether Beyond lives up to the high expectations set by the first three Metroid Prime games remains to be seen, but ultimately, the game’s success won’t rest solely on Retro Studio’s shoulders.

Nintendo Life recently noticed that the credits for Metroid Prime 4 list 21 different companies that helped with development, not counting individual freelancers. Interestingly, Bandai Namco, who Nintendo initially assigned to work on the game, isn’t included in that list. Nintendo switched development to Retro Studios – the original creators of the Prime series – back in 2019. Although it took a long time to finish, it’s now apparent that Retro Studios didn’t work on the game alone, and many other companies contributed to making sure it met fans’ and Nintendo’s standards.

Several well-known developers are working on Metroid Prime 4. Virtuos has become recognized for its high-quality remasters, including Oblivion Remastered and Metal Gear Solid Delta. However, the company recently faced criticism after announcing layoffs affecting around 7% of its employees—up to 300 people. It’s currently unknown if these layoffs occurred before or after their work on Metroid Prime 4, or if any of the developers who contributed to the game were impacted. Additionally, Next Level Games, the studio behind recent Luigi’s Mansion and Mario Strikers titles, also worked on the project, known internally as Beyond.

Next Level isn’t new to the Metroid Prime series; they also created Metroid Prime: Federation Force. While Federation Force isn’t a fan favorite, it did give the studio experience with the franchise. The extensive list of teams involved in Metroid Prime 4‘s development might seem surprising, but it’s becoming more common for large games to be developed with help from multiple studios and contractors. As games grow more complex, bringing in outside assistance is a normal way to ensure a game is completed on schedule.
