Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Locks Basic Feature Behind $30 Amiibo

After a long wait, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is now available, but fans have discovered that a key feature is only accessible by using an Amiibo figure.

After an 18-year wait following the release of Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, the fourth game in the series, Metroid Prime 4, launched on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 on December 4th. However, initial reviews have been somewhat disappointing, with the game receiving the lowest critic scores of any Metroid Prime title.

Honestly, things could still turn around, and maybe player reviews will get better. But locking a core feature behind a paywall really stinks, and it’s made one part of the game feel totally empty and lifeless. It’s a bummer, because it feels like they’re prioritizing profit over making a fun experience for everyone.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Desert Music Locked Behind Amiibo Purchase

A recent discovery highlighted on Twitter by Luke Stephens reveals that a specific music track in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond – heard while riding the Vi-O-La bike in the desert area – is only available to players who have purchased the $29.99 Samus Amiibo figure.

If you own the Samus Amiibo, Nintendo says you’ll get bonus background music in the game, plus a daily shield that can absorb up to 99 points of damage and completely refill Samus’ health once a day.

Okay, so the game description doesn’t mention this, but if you don’t get the Amiibo figure for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the desert area is totally silent and pretty empty. It feels like something’s missing unless you buy the figure, which is a bummer!

You can also buy two more Amiibo figures for extra perks. The Samus & Vi-O-La figure lets you change colors, see how far you’ve traveled, and gives Viola a daily boost to how quickly her special energy refills.

As a big fan, I was so excited to unlock Cyrax! It lets you watch the complete versions of those cool movie clips you see bits and pieces of during the game. You can only see the full movies after beating the game, and normally you’d have to get a perfect scan and collect everything to unlock it, but Cyrax makes it available right away!

Some features in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will only be accessible by using Amiibo figures. We’d love to hear your opinions on this – join the discussion in the TopMob Discord!
