As a long-time fan of the Metroid series, I’ve played my fair share of games within this beloved franchise. However, there is one title that has always stood out to me as a hidden gem: Metroid Prime Hunters. Released back in 2006 for the Nintendo DS, this game was an exciting spin-off set between the events of Metroid Prime and Metroid Prime 2: Echoes.

Following the success of last year’s “Metroid Prime Remastered” for the Switch, the excitement for “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” has grown even more after its first gameplay reveal during the recent Nintendo Direct presentation. A sneak peek in the trailer for “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” introduced us to the enigmatic antagonist, Sylux, hinting at Samus’ upcoming confrontation with him. Although some fans are clamoring for remasters of “Metroid Prime 2: Echoes” and “Metroid Prime 3: Corruption” prior to the launch of “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond,” another game in the series might be more deserving of a remake before its release.

Before jumping into the new Metroid Prime 4: Beyond game, Nintendo should consider making Metroid Prime Hunters, an essential prequel originally released for the Nintendo DS in 2006, more accessible. Although it might seem logical for Nintendo to remaster Metroid Prime 2 and 3 following the success of the first game, Sylux’s introduction in Metroid Prime Hunters is vital for players to fully grasp the storyline before experiencing the upcoming release. As a side note in the Metroid Prime series, Metroid Prime Hunters serves as an excellent bridge to familiarize fans with Sylux and prepare them for the events of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond.

Metroid Prime Hunters Serves as Sylux’s Introduction

As a gamer, I’d put it this way: In Metroid Prime Hunters, I step into the role of a bounty hunter named _____ (you can fill in the blank with your preferred character name). I join Samus Aran and other elite hunters – Kanden, Spire, Noxus, Trace, Weavel, and Sylux – on a mission to the Alimbic Cluster. This once-thriving home of the extinct Alimbic race is now a mystery, shrouded in intrigue following rumors of a force promising ultimate power.

In the intriguing world of “Metroid,” these bounty hunters pose as formidable adversaries, each driven by their own ambition to seize ultimate power. Among them emerges Sylux, a cunning and dangerous enemy Samus encounters on this mission. Sylux harbors an intense grudge against Samus and the Galactic Federation, but the reasons for her animosity remain shrouded in mystery. Following the occurrences of “Metroid Prime Hunters,” Sylux slips into the shadows, becoming a menacing figure in subsequent games. She makes an appearance at the conclusion of “Metroid Prime 3: Corruption,” trailing Samus’ ship, and at the end of “Metroid Prime: Federation Force,” where she can be observed freeing a Metroid from a research lab belonging to the Federation Force.

Metroid Prime Hunters Deserves a Modern Upgrade

It’s clear that Metroid Prime Hunters holds a more important role in the franchise’s story than its status as a side game would have players believe. Unfortunately, the game is largely held back by the Nintendo DS’ hardware, forcing players to use the handheld’s touchscreen to aim Samus’ arm cannon for a less-than-ideal control scheme. While the game was made available on the Wii U’s eShop, it still required this awkward control scheme using the Wii U’s gamepad, and is no longer available now that the Wii U eShop has been discontinued.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve come to appreciate the hidden gems within the vast Metroid universe. One such game that deserves more recognition is Metroid Prime Hunters. To truly bring out its potential, I believe an update to its graphics and controls is in order, making it more akin to Metroid Prime Remastered. This enhancement would not only breathe new life into this title but also remind fans of the unique concepts it offers, which have often been overlooked.
