Man, it feels like forever ago – 2017, actually – when they first announced Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It was originally going to be on the Switch, but things changed, the game got a new name, and honestly, we all just waited… and waited. Almost a decade, actually! Now that it’s finally here, I think a lot of us are wondering if all that waiting was actually worth it.
If you’re not completely thrilled with Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, there are plenty of other immersive, first-person shooter games you can play. Some are available on the Nintendo Switch, and others are on different consoles, but they’re all relatively easy to find.
Alien: Isolation
Where’s Mommy?
The Metroid series took inspiration from the Alien movies, so it makes sense to suggest a video game based on that film series. Of all the Alien games out there, Alien: Isolation remains the most highly regarded.
As Amanda Ripley, you’re stranded on a derelict space station searching for your mother, Ellen Ripley – the famous hero from the Alien movies. You’ll encounter dangerous, infected robots and terrifying Xenomorphs, all determined to stop you. With limited weapons, you’ll need to rely on stealth and solve puzzles to try and escape, and the feeling of being hunted by the alien is genuinely frightening.
BioShock
Don’t Spring A Leak
Unlike most games set in space, BioShock takes place in the ruined underwater city of Rapture. This once-perfect city is now crumbling and overrun by mutated inhabitants. As you play, you’ll need to find weapons and special abilities while uncovering the city’s secrets through audio logs, all while battling dangerous enemies called Splicers and terrifying, hulking creatures known as Big Daddies.
Even now, years after its release, BioShock remains a truly exceptional game. It’s just as enjoyable to play today as it was back in 2007. The game’s unique underwater setting, exciting abilities, and thought-provoking story – which even offers a clever take on video games themselves – all combine to make BioShock a timeless classic that deserves to be experienced by everyone.
Halo Infinite
Master Chief Goes Open-World
Halo Infinite is unique in the series for its open-world design, putting players in a vast environment as Master Chief. The original Halo revolutionized console shooters, and many games that followed, including Metroid Prime, were heavily influenced by it.
Both Samus Aran and Master Chief are iconic, mostly silent heroes who fight in powerful suits. The main differences are that Master Chief is male and relies on an AI companion. In Halo Infinite, players have access to a wide range of weapons and vehicles to defeat enemies and explore the game world.
Half-Life 2
A Freed Man
Many consider Half-Life 2 to be the best shooter ever made. Although its shooting isn’t as refined as games like Call of Duty or Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, the game’s world is incredibly well-designed and immersive.
Once you leave the city, the game opens up, giving you a vehicle and a gravity gun to use in challenging puzzles. The game creates a really intense, confined feeling, which is a major reason why fans still love it and want a sequel. Half-Life 2 is truly unique and played a huge role in making Valve a leading game developer.
Portal 2
I’m A Potato
Portal 2 builds significantly on the first game, expanding beyond a simple series of puzzle rooms. While it still centers around the Portal Gun and solving puzzles, the sequel offers a more expansive adventure with a more intricate and surprising storyline connecting everything together.
Playing the first Portal alongside Portal 2 really enhances the experience, making for a great weekend gaming session. Portal 2 is full of clever surprises on its own, but when combined with the original Portal and its co-op mode, it creates a truly exceptional and nearly flawless collection of innovative gameplay.
Borderlands 4
Guns Aplenty
As a huge fan of both series, if you loved the exploration and movement in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond but wished there were more crazy guns and a bigger world, then Borderlands 4 is definitely for you! It’s a really action-packed game with a massive open world to run around in, and it even lets you get around in cool ways, like with a digital motorcycle or a grappling hook – just like Metroid Prime 4!
Like all Borderlands games, humor is a key part of this experience, with a world full of quirky characters and over-the-top scenarios. You can play as one of four different characters, each with their own unique abilities. Vex and Harlowe, in particular, feel like a nod to Samus Aran with their design and roles.
Dishonored
The Drunken Whaler
The game Dishonored begins with a sense of peace. Corvo, a royal guard, is happily protecting the Queen’s daughter, Emily, when the Queen is unexpectedly killed, and Corvo is falsely accused. Imprisoned, Corvo makes a deal with a mysterious being called The Outsider, who grants him supernatural powers to uncover the true killers and seek retribution.
This game emphasizes stealth and lets you explore the steampunk city of Dunwall. Your goal is to eliminate important targets, bringing you closer to discovering who murdered the Queen. It offers a lot of freedom in how you play – you can be quiet and sneaky, or go in loud – and rewards players for trying different approaches to each assassination.
Perfect Dark
Don’t Turn Off The Lights
Perfect Dark is a classic stealth-action game originally released for the Nintendo 64. Players control Joanna Dark, a secret agent, as she completes missions filled with both stealth and shooting. Though she uses cool gadgets, the game is primarily a fast-paced shooter where Joanna fights to protect the world.
As a long-time fan, I’m so excited they’ve remastered the game for Xbox! It looks and plays so much cleaner now, and it’s a really comfortable experience. For those of us who grew up with it, Joanna is just as iconic a character as Samus Aran – even if she didn’t get as many games over the years. She really holds a special place in my heart.
Prey (2017)
Beware Of Mimics
The 2017 game Prey is set on a space station invaded by Mimics – creatures with the ability to disguise themselves as everyday objects, like mugs or chairs. This makes the game particularly good at delivering sudden, startling scares, as these creatures can appear unexpectedly.
You won’t have many weapons at the start, but you’ll gradually become capable of defending yourself while searching for an escape. It’s not quite as stressful as Alien: Isolation, which has a similar premise, but Prey offers more varied and engaging weapons if that’s important to you.
F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
Ghost Girls
While it’s best to start with the first game, you won’t be completely lost jumping into F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin. The story is easy enough to follow even out of order. The game centers around an elite military team battling in a dangerous war zone, where they face a terrifying enemy: a psychic child who can control people’s minds.
While playing through the standard shooting missions in F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin, you’ll frequently be startled by sudden scares, which is unusual for this type of game. However, it surprisingly works! The series is well-known for its slow-motion feature, making battles look epic, and its enemy AI is still remarkably good.
