Metroid Prime 4 Gets One Step Closer to Release

In a recent update, it’s been revealed that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has received another age rating, this time in the U.S. Although the specific classification isn’t yet listed on the ESRB database, Nintendo themselves have confirmed this news, implying that Metroid Prime 4 could be coming out soon.

Since at least 2017, the fourth game in the Metroid Prime series has been under development, as announced that year. However, it seems like the project went back for revisions around 2019. In mid-2024, Nintendo confirmed a release window of 2025, but so far, they haven’t provided specifics about when we can expect it to be available.

Metroid Prime 4 Receives ESRB Rating

Currently, it appears that the game “Metroid Prime 4” has been given an ESRB rating around late August 2025, as noted by Reddit user ShoulderAdvanced6854. The game’s eShop listing now displays a “Teen” rating, with content warnings for “animated blood, violence,” and “in-game purchases.” This rating aligns with previous titles in the series, all of which also received the same Teen classification from ESRB. However, the game itself is not yet officially listed on the ESRB database; instead, the rating information can be found only on its eShop page.

Is Metroid Prime 4 ESRB Rating Alluding to DLC?

According to the ratings, Nintendo has confirmed that Metroid Prime 4 will provide an upgrade option for Nintendo Switch 2 owners. This means that those with the latest console can choose to pay extra for improved technical aspects. It’s also speculated that the game may offer additional downloadable content in the future, but the ESRB rating seems to be referring to the Switch 2 upgrade primarily.

The new rating for Metroid Prime 4 doesn’t automatically mean it’s about to be released. This is because ratings like these are usually given based on game descriptions rather than playable versions, which developers submit to regulatory bodies. However, with Nintendo confirming in early August that the release date of Metroid Prime 4 won’t slide into 2026, hints suggest a launch may be imminent.

A month ago, the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) rating was discovered for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, even though it had previously been rated by South Korea’s GRAC and deemed suitable for ages 12 and up. Since there’s no official release date yet but the game is still aiming for a 2025 launch, many believe that its debut during the holiday season in 2025 is most likely. It’s also possible that we might hear about its release date for the first time at the anticipated September 2025 Nintendo Direct event.
