A surprise moved the Metroid community not long ago when Nintendo and Retro Studios suddenly released an upgraded version of the 2002 GameCube hit, Metroid Prime. This unexpected announcement during a February 2023 Nintendo Direct was followed by a digital launch on Nintendo Switch that same day, with the physical version arriving soon after. Upon playing the game, many fans felt that Metroid Prime Remastered had received more attention than its title suggested. While it was called a remaster, it featured significantly improved graphics, new Color Assist options, and better control schemes.
As a gamer, I can proudly say that I contributed to the massive success of Metroid Prime Remastered, having been part of the more than 1.3 million copies sold globally in just five months. The game received rave reviews from fellow gamers and critics alike, with sites like OpenCritic giving it a sparkling 94/100 Top Critic Average and a 100% Critics Recommend rating.
Even though Metroid Prime Remastered is essentially a modernized version of a 23-year-old game, it feels tailor-made for the Nintendo Switch. However, I believe it could be even more exceptional on the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, especially with the addition of one significant feature.
Metroid Prime Remastered Should Get a Switch 2 Port With Mouse Mode Support
Some Nintendo Switch 2 Games, Like Metroid Prime 4, Can Be Played Using Mouse Controls
The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 shares many features with its forerunner, but boasts several innovative additions. One such feature is the introduction of Mouse Mode. Unlike its predecessor, the new Joy-Con 2 controllers can be rotated sideways and used as mice. While not all games on the forthcoming console will support this function, those that do will incorporate it smoothly. Users have found that transitioning between conventional joystick controls and Mouse Mode is effortless, without any need for navigating menus at all.
In a significant shift for gaming on Nintendo Switch 2, the upcoming title “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond” from Retro Studios will offer full mouse control functionality. Given that this cross-generational game is categorized as a first-person shooter (or adventure game, depending on preference), this feature is particularly noteworthy. Typically, first-person games are optimally played with a mouse and keyboard, while controllers often fall short when it comes to precise aiming. Since “Metroid Prime 4” isn’t slated for PC release, the option of playing it with mouse controls would normally be unavailable. However, with the Mouse Mode feature on Switch 2, this limitation has been overcome.
Metroid Prime 4 is Going to Receive an Upgraded Switch 2 Edition
Games for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will come in two formats: Switch 2 Editions or standard upgrades. For instance, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, slated for release on both the original Switch and the Switch 2 in 2025, will feature a Switch 2 Edition boasting extra features such as Mouse Mode and enhanced frame rates. All Switch 2 Edition games will carry a higher price tag than their initial versions, but those who already own the first-gen version of a game can buy an upgrade pack to acquire its next-gen counterpart.
Metroid Prime Remastered With Mouse Controls Would Be the Best Way to Play the Game
Despite some criticism towards Nintendo’s recent pricing strategies, many fans eagerly anticipate a Switch 2 Edition (or even just an update) of “Metroid Prime Remastered.” This updated version could offer players the unique experience of playing the original “Metroid Prime” game using Mouse Mode, significantly enhancing aiming in the game. If Nintendo were to apply the same enhancements to “Metroid Prime Remastered” as they are to “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond,” the Switch 2 would undeniably become the ideal platform for enjoying both games.
