Tyler Glaiel, one of the developers working on the roguelike game Mewgenics, has given players a general idea of when the first downloadable content (DLC) might be released. While he can’t give a specific date yet, he says the new content is still some time away.
After almost 14 years of development, starting in 2012 after the creation of Super Meat Boy, Mewgenics launched on February 10, 2026. Surprisingly, unlike many games with long development times, Mewgenics received excellent reviews. It scored an average of 89 from top critics on OpenCritic and earned “Very Positive” reviews on Steam. The game also quickly attracted a large player base, reaching over 115,000 concurrent players on Steam. So far, this roguelike strategy game has been a huge success, and its creators are already planning more improvements.
Gamers Shouldn’t Expect Mewgenics DLC Any Time Soon
After the strong launch of Mewgenics, creators Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel are starting to plan future content. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Glaiel shared some initial thoughts on the first DLC. He said he’s feeling optimistic about it and hinted at a potential release timeframe. While the DLC is intended to be relatively small in scope, Glaiel estimates it might be ready by the end of next year, though he admits that’s uncertain. He explained that he needs time to address bugs and provide support for the main game, as well as handle personal tasks like finances and finding a new home, before fully focusing on DLC development. However, the planning process is already underway.
Glaiel hinted that Mewgenics could get at least two downloadable content packs in the future. This is typical for games made by Edmund McMillen – The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth received three major expansions between 2015 and 2021, and fans loved them all. Considering this, a late 2027 release for the first Mewgenics expansion seems likely, especially given what Glaiel has said. The game already has a lot to offer players, and its replay value is very high, which is common for roguelike games. It’s encouraging to see a developer prioritize quality and take the time needed to make sure any new content meets the high standards of the original game, especially when many games focus on constantly releasing new material.
DLC 1 is supposed to be a ‘small’ one so ideally, like, end of next year maybe.
While there aren’t any big updates planned for Mewgenics right now, exciting things are still in the works. Edmund McMillen recently announced that the game is being considered for a console release, with the Nintendo Switch 2 currently being the most likely platform. Although no final decision has been made, bringing Mewgenics to consoles would allow more players to experience this fantastic roguelike game.
