Mewgenics is a surprisingly deep strategy game about cats. It looks cute, but the gameplay is quite complex! If you’re having trouble understanding the different systems, battling effectively, or building the perfect cat habitat, don’t worry – I’ve put together a guide with helpful tips and tricks to improve your game and get the most out of Mewgenics.
Focus on Furniture to Help Breed Better Cats
At first, the quality of the cats you get depends mostly on luck. But you’ll quickly be able to influence which cats visit your house and improve the quality of your kittens – we’ll explain how later.
Baby Jack is a character who cares for your injured cats – cats get hurt in battles or from fighting each other at home. When you have cats that need healing, send them to Baby Jack, and he’ll start offering furniture you can purchase for your house.
This furniture can boost the comfort, visual appeal, and overall well-being of your home and its rooms. These improvements are important for a system called Mewgenics, which is explained in more detail below.
- Comfort: This stat, represented by a sleeping cat, determines how often your cats will breed.
- Appeal: This stat is represented by a house icon and affects the quality of the strays that appear outside your house every day. The higher the appeal, the better the stats of the stray cats.
- Mutation: The DNA icon represents this, and the Mutation stat of a room in your house determines how like a cat in that room will mutate.
- Stimulation: The yarn ball icon represents Stimulation, which determines how many stats and abilities can be passed down from parent cats to their kitten, and improves the chances of the kitten inheriting the best of picks of both.
- Health: The little health icon stat determines how likely your cats are to recover from wounds and diseases at the end of a day.
To make good progress in Mewgenics, it’s important to improve your cats’ stats. Don’t hesitate to use injured cats with Baby Jack to quickly get new furniture for your home.
Donate Cats When They’re Past Their Prime
Just because Twinkle was one of your earliest cats to finish a race doesn’t mean they’re still useful to you. It’s okay to retire them and let them enjoy life with one of the game’s characters.
Each NPC takes on different types of cat:
- Butch: Cats that have reached certain areas on a run
- Baby Jack: Injured cats
- Frank: Retired cats
- Tink: Kittens
- Dr Beanies: Cats with mutations
- Tracy: Cats age five or older
As a player, I’ve found that some characters will actually reward you with cool new items or upgrades if you give them cats! It seems a little sad, but it’s totally worth letting your feline helpers go once they’ve finished what you needed them for – the rewards are great!
Save your strongest, healthiest cats for breeding and keep them around even after they retire from fighting, as they can still be useful for protecting your home.
Pick Level Up Abilities and Cat Collars Carefully
Here’s a helpful reminder for playing Mewgenics: it’s a strategy game, so careful planning is key! Thinking things through can really give you an advantage.
When choosing a collar for your cat, consider how its stats fit your team’s needs. As your cat levels up, carefully select abilities that work well with its existing moves. For example, a cat that can freeze enemies is a great match for the ‘Shatter’ ability, which instantly defeats frozen enemies or damages bosses.
In the game Mewgenics, you’ll find many powerful combinations that can really help you progress if you’re having trouble completing runs.
Don’t Hoard Consumable Items
As your cats win battles, find hidden items, or shop at Tracy’s, they can earn useful items to help them. These items can be equipped to boost their attack power, increase their range, or even remove negative effects. Keep in mind that many of these items can only be used a limited number of times.
It can be a little nerve-wracking to use up an item’s special abilities, but don’t worry too much about it. You’ll find lots of different items as you play, so you likely won’t have to wait long to find the same one again. Using these items effectively can really help you progress further in your game.
Use Your House’s Rooms Smartly
When you begin playing Mewgenics, you’ll start with a single room. Once you’ve given Frank your first cat, you’ll unlock the attic in your house. This new space lets you keep cats separate, giving you control over which ones can breed together.
This allows you to keep the peace and prevent injuries by separating cats that don’t get along. Focus on breeding your healthiest cats, keep them together, and remove weaker or aggressive cats to give your best cats more room and ensure their well-being.
Check Cat Lineage to Avoid Inbreeding
As mentioned earlier, your home’s rooms will be essential for setting up a successful cat breeding operation. But simply putting cats together isn’t enough. It’s important to ensure that cats sharing a room aren’t closely related, so they can actually breed.
As a cat breeder, I’ve learned it’s super important to avoid mating closely related cats. If you do, you risk kittens being born with health problems. Even if they seem okay, inbred cats tend to be less strong and aren’t as good for, well, anything demanding like fighting or competitions. And if you happen to get a cat with a mutation, Dr. Beanies is the place to take it. Or, if it’s a little kitten with a mutation, Tink is always happy to help find it a good home!
Movement on the Battlefield Is Key
Okay, so I’ve learned the hard way that just face-tanking enemies isn’t the best strategy. Seriously, try to get behind them whenever you can! It makes a huge difference – I’m talking a 25% damage boost! It doesn’t seem like much at first, but trust me, in a long fight, especially with a boss, that extra damage really adds up and can save your life.
Remember, the game area has both useful items and dangerous obstacles. Walking a cat onto a fire square will hurt it, but collecting coins and health boosts can be a lifesaver during a challenging game.
Clean Up Poop to Keep Cats Comfortable and Healthy
You’ll occasionally find cat waste inside your home. It’s important to clean it up quickly, as it affects your cats’ comfort and breeding habits. Leaving waste around can also increase the risk of your cats getting sick.
This is a key stat to focus on, right up there with Appeal and Stimulation. The more injured cats you give to Baby Jack, the more furniture he’ll provide for your house. This furniture also makes your cats more comfortable, so it’s a good idea to buy it whenever you can.
Clerics Are Your Best Friend
One of the first things I discovered in Mewgenics is that bringing a Cleric cat on your adventure team is essential for success. Clerics can heal and bring back to life your other cats when they get hurt.
Cats without a dedicated healer will need to find food or healing items during battles, equip healing items beforehand, or recover health by completing fights. Having a cleric nearby will significantly extend your cats’ health and keep them fighting fit.
