As a devoted Metal Gear Solid fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the release of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater – The New Ops. This remake maintains its core essence, but there are significant enhancements that cater to both fresh recruits and seasoned veterans like myself. For newbies, these updates make the game more inviting and approachable. Even for us long-time MGS fans, there’s a plethora of brand-new collectibles hidden within the main narrative for us to uncover!
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater offers an authentic experience for purists by incorporating the original control scheme, just like on the PlayStation 2. It’s also worth noting that this re-release is the first one to include some of the coolest Easter eggs and side modes from the original release. If you’ve previously played Snake Eater only on PS2 or through the Metal Gear Solid HD Collection, then prepare for these exciting changes in Metal Gear Solid Delta!
New Controls and Camera
In this new rendition of Snake Eater, known as Metal Gear Solid Delta, a significant shift can be observed. The game offers completely redesigned controls and introduces a fresh third-person camera view that provides smoother combat sequences. What’s fascinating is that within MGS Delta, you have the freedom to toggle between Legacy and New Style perspectives at your leisure. This means you can enjoy the original’s fixed camera angles or the new over-the-shoulder perspective whenever it suits you best.
In the updated version of Metal Gear Solid Delta, some buttons have been repositioned compared to their positions in the original PlayStation 2 game. This change is intended to make the game more accessible for new players. Moreover, players have the freedom to tailor their control setup and relocate any button according to their preference if they find the default layout unsatisfactory.
Rebalanced Combat and Stealth
The new camera styles not only alter your viewpoint but also significantly affect the behavior of your enemies. If you opt for New Style’s over-the-shoulder view, enemies will display increased aggression to counterbalance. On the other hand, in Legacy Style, enemies will shoot slower and have difficulty spotting you from afar due to the overhead perspective, which might help prevent frustration with this viewpoint.
As I navigate through the game with the New Style perspective, I can move around while firing and get a third-person view. But let me tell you, those guards are on high alert! The difficulty level doesn’t change much between modes, it’s just a bit of fine-tuning that differentiates them.
Crouch Walking
In the original version of “Snake Eater,” Snake could only stand or crawl while moving, but couldn’t crouch while stationary. However, the 3DS port introduced the ability to move even while crouching. This feature has been incorporated into the remake of “Metal Gear Solid Delta” and is available in both New and Legacy styles.
GA-KO and Kerotan
Initially, in the original “Snake Eater”, there were 64 Kerotan frogs skillfully concealed within the main plot, offering Stealth Camo as a reward to those who discovered them all. Now, in the sequel “Metal Gear Solid Delta”, both Kerotans and new GA-KO ducks have been added. In this game, you’ll find 64 GA-KO ducks hidden, but they are more difficult to locate due to their excellent camouflage. If you manage to find every last one of them, you’ll earn the latest reward – the AT-Camo, a ghillie suit that significantly enhances your Camo Index.
Snake Vs. Monkey (and Bomberman)
In every reissue of “Snake Eater” except for the original one, the popular minigame “Snake vs. Monkey” resurfaces in “Metal Gear Solid Delta”. This game finds Snake chasing down monkeys, similar to those seen in “Ape Escape”. However, since “MGS Delta” is a multi-platform title, other systems will encounter the “Snake vs. Bomberman” mode instead, which shares similarities with the original but includes fresh dialogue.
Guy Savage
The Guy Savage hack-and-slash mini-game, absent from previous re-releases of Snake Eater, has made a comeback in Metal Gear Solid Delta with a new polish. Platinum Games lent a hand in its development, making Guy Savage an enjoyable experience to partake in. You can find it by using the original prison nightmare Easter egg from the PS2 game, or after finishing the main story in Metal Gear Solid Delta from the main menu. It serves as a fun diversion until Fox Hunt multiplayer mode becomes available.
Revamped Camo Changing
In the game ‘Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater’, keeping a high Camouflage (Camo) Rating is crucial for your survival. The developers have introduced an innovative camouflage shortcut system that enables you to quickly change your uniform and face paint without interrupting the gameplay. By remembering your recent camo/paint choices, ‘MGS Delta’ allows you to access them with just a button press, making it simpler than ever to blend in with your surroundings and avoid detection.
Cure Menu Pop-Ups
In the original version of Snake Eater, frequently halting the game due to treating injuries was quite a hassle. However, in Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, when Snake is injured, a prompt appears on the screen. By pressing up on the d-pad, you’ll instantly be directed to the Healing menu, making parts of the game such as the battle against The Fear less bothersome.
Secret Theater
In the game “Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater,” the enigmatic Secret Cinema returns, offering fresh, previously unseen scenes for discovery. The Secret Cinema showcases humorous vignettes tied to the storyline of “Snake Eater.” To unlock these hidden gems, strategically hold up guards in specific campaign zones. The newly added Secret Cinema sequences align seamlessly with the originals from Kojima and are absolutely worth uncovering.
