MGS3: Snake Eater Shouldn't Be Only Classic PS Game Given a Remake

Highlights

  • Metal Gear Solid franchise was left in limbo post-Kojima’s departure in 2015, but a revival is now on the horizon with a remake of MGS 3.
  • Fans have high hopes for Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, which promises to update graphics and gameplay to modern AAA standards.
  • Konami should learn from past remake mistakes from The Twin Snakes and preserve Hideo Kojima’s original vision for a potential MGS 1 remake.

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I can confidently say that the return of Metal Gear Solid to the forefront is like a long-lost friend coming home. The franchise has been through its fair share of ups and downs, but the announcement of Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater has breathed new life into the series.

The fate of the Metal Gear franchise hung in uncertainty following Hideo Kojima’s unexpected departure from Konami in 2015. After this high-profile separation, the series saw a new release in 2018 called Metal Gear Survive, but this spin-off game was met with such poor reception that it put the franchise on an indefinite pause. This led many fans to believe that the Metal Gear series was essentially finished. Given that Konami started focusing more on mobile games and free-to-play titles instead of AAA console development, the likelihood of the series making a comeback dwindled significantly.

2023 rolled around and Konami dropped a bombshell: they were working on a remake of my all-time favorite game, Metal Gear Solid 3, titled Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. This announcement was like a breath of fresh air for the franchise, which had been struggling a bit. As more details emerged in the following months, it became clear that this remake wouldn’t just preserve the original’s level design and storyline, but would also overhaul the graphics and gameplay to meet today’s AAA standards. From what I’ve seen so far, Metal Gear Solid Delta seems poised to deliver on fans’ expectations. If Konami can pull off this game as well as it seems they might, they should definitely consider giving other games in the MGS series a similar remake treatment, starting with Metal Gear Solid 1.

Metal Gear Solid 1 Should Get the Same Remake Treatment That MGS 3 is Getting

Metal Gear Solid 1 is in Need of a Remake More Than Other Entries in the Series

Back in 1998, when Metal Gear Solid was first released on the PlayStation 1, it left a significant impact on the gaming world. Its innovative stealth-based gameplay and cinematic narrative style captivated players. The game went on to sell an impressive seven million copies globally and continues to be considered by many as the peak of the Metal Gear series.

Although Metal Gear Solid has not aged as well as its contemporary games, this original version stands out differently from later mainline installments in the series. For instance, unlike subsequent titles, Metal Gear Solid employs an isometric camera angle similar to a 2D game and displays rudimentary facial expressions. While the graphics were state-of-the-art when it was first released, they now appear outdated compared to games such as Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on the PS2. Consequently, it’s evident that a remake of Metal Gear Solid 1 would significantly improve its visuals and overall experience.

MGS 1 Received a Divisive Remake in the Past That Konami Should Avoid Repeating The Mistakes Of

Previously, the classic game “Metal Gear Solid” has undergone a remake. In the year 2004, Konami introduced a version titled “Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes,” which was exclusive to the Nintendo GameCube. This remake substantially upgraded the graphics of the original PlayStation 1 game and added new cutscenes, additional story elements, and various gameplay features. Although “The Twin Snakes” offered a playable version of “MGS 1” that generally received positive feedback, the alterations made in the remake sparked significant debate. Some critics even argued that these changes diminished Hideo Kojima’s original vision for the PlayStation 1 game.

If Metal Gear Solid receives another remake, Konami ought to steer clear of replicating the same errors committed in The Twin Snakes. Rather, it would be prudent for them to draw inspiration from MGS Delta: Snake Eater, and ensure that the game’s narrative and cinematic aspects remain untouched. Furthermore, an MGS 1 remake should offer players the option to toggle between contemporary and classic control schemes.

An MGS 1 Remake Could Already Be in Development

It’s quite possible that the remake of Metal Gear Solid 1 could hinge on the success of MGS: Delta. But whispers abound that this game might be secretly underway and geared towards launching on contemporary gaming systems soon. Fingers crossed, as it would be a cherished wish to see the first Metal Gear Solid reimagined with updated visuals, while still preserving its original essence.
