As a long-time fan of My Hero Academia, I must say that the extra chapter was a rollercoaster ride of emotions! It was heartwarming to see all our favorite characters grown into powerful heroes, yet still dealing with their personal struggles and relationships.
Previously this year, the much-adored superhero manga series by Kohei Horikoshi, titled “My Hero Academia“, wrapped up its storyline. Nevertheless, the final installment sparked debate among fans due to several key questions left unexplained and unanswered, which was disheartening for many long-term readers who had followed the series for a decade.
Luckily for them, their story didn’t seem to have reached its conclusion just yet. The latest volume, number 42, of “My Hero Academia” has just been released in Japan, and it contains an additional chapter hidden within: Chapter 431. Essentially serving as a wrap-up to the narrative, this extra chapter provides some much-needed answers to the story’s most intriguing questions, addressing many of the lingering mysteries from the ending in a satisfying manner.
Warning! Spoilers Ahead!
1. How Did Mirio Become The #1 Pro Hero?
His Comedic Antics Resonated A Lot With The Public, Especially Kids
Previously, in Chapter 430, Izuku Midoriya mentioned that his friend, Mirio Togata, had risen to the top spot on the Japanese Hero Billboard Chart as the new number one Pro Hero. However, at that time, no details were provided about how he achieved this position or what the public’s current perception of Mirio is. Furthermore, the manga creator, Horikoshi, did not reveal what Mirio looks like now, eight years after the final battle.
In Chapter 431, all prior misunderstandings were cleared up by unveiling Mirio’s fresh new appearance. He appears cooler and funnier than ever before! His complete title is now “Hero of Comedy: Lemillion,” and it appears he’s extremely well-liked, particularly among children, due to his amusing stunts and larger-than-life persona. This not only fits Mirio’s public image, which recalls All Might, but it also serves as a satisfying culmination for his entire character journey.
2. Did All Might Sign Bakugo’s Trading Card?
Yes, Bakugo Finally Got His Idol’s Signature
During the Final War Arc, Katsuki Bakugo, who had come close to death, encountered a remnant of All Might. In this emotional encounter, he confessed his long-held desire to have the actual All Might sign a trading card he’d been saving since childhood. This touching moment hinted at Bakugo’s deep respect for the Symbol of Peace, mirroring Deku’s admiration, but unfortunately, the series concluded before it was revealed whether or not he would obtain that signature.
In a seemingly inconsequential moment in Chapter 431, Deku spots an All Might trading card within Bakugo’s car. Not just any card, but one signed by Toshinori himself and carefully laminated by Bakugo for constant companionship. This small gesture left Deku smiling, adding a heartwarming touch to the conclusion of Bakugo’s narrative. Interestingly, this is the sole reference to All Might throughout the entire Chapter 431.
3. Did Deku Quit His Job As A Teacher?
No, He Can Be Both A Hero And A Teacher At The Same Time
The closing scene of Chapter 430 disclosed that Deku’s old classmates had financed the construction of a new armor suit, enabling him to resume hero duties. This revelation added a thrilling and engrossing conclusion to the chapter (and the series), yet left some viewers with a bitter aftertaste: Had he truly abandoned his position as a teacher at U.A. High School after devoting an entire chapter to discussing his affection for it?
However, contrary to what might seem reasonable, Pro Heroes in the My Hero Academia universe aren’t just crime-fighters; they also serve as educators. Shota Aizawa exemplifies this dual role. In Chapter 431, Izuku affirms that he managed to keep his teaching job after getting the suit and even expressed a deep fondness for it, stating that he would have chosen teaching as his career if he hadn’t lost One For All initially.
4. What Are The Hero Rankings Of The Rest Of Class 1-A?
Most Of Deku’s Friends Are Ranked Quite High On The Hero Billboard Chart
In Chapter 430, Deku briefly mentioned the positions that his friends are currently holding in the Japanese Hero Billboard Charts and confirmed that Bakugo, Todoroki, Shoji, Mirio, Honenuki, and Monoma are among the highest-rated heroes. While this was a fascinating revelation, many fans were inevitably left wondering about what happened to everyone else and where exactly in the ranking they were positioned after the time skip.
In Chapter 431, all members of Class 1-A gather together, and the creator, Horikoshi, used this occasion to display the exact order of every student’s abilities. Some notable students, such as Kaminari (ranked 44th), Sero (ranked 36th), Yayaorozu (ranked 19th), Tokoyami (ranked 17th) and Mineta (at the bottom of the list, ranked 108th), are shown. Interestingly, characters like Aoyama, Koda, or Sato don’t appear in the rankings because they continue to work as assistants for other heroes.
5. What Happened To The Shiketsu High School Students?
They Graduated And They’re Also Ranked On The Hero Billboard Chart
Besides U.A. High School, Shiketsu High School in Japan is also a significant hero school, known for its notable characters such as Inasa Yoarashi, Camie Utsushimi, and Seiji Shishikura. However, the series concludes without revealing whether these characters graduated or are currently working as Pro Heroes post-time skip.
Once more, Chapter 431 comes in handy as it reveals the fates of Shiketsu’s students in the Hero Billboard Chart. It’s quite gratifying to learn that Shishikura is currently ranked #41 and Yoarashi stands at #16. Interestingly, Camie now works back at her old school.
6. Can Deku Actually Use His New Suit To Fight Crime?
Yes, And He Can Even Keep Up With All Of His Friends
Despite the stunning appearance of Deku’s new suit in Chapter 430, the chapter ended abruptly with a quick scene of all members of Class 1-A teaming up together, leaving viewers without a proper demonstration of the suit in action. This ambiguity raised questions among fans about whether Deku could effectively battle villains and function as a Pro Hero wearing this suit, or if it was merely for display purposes, potentially placing him at a disadvantage compared to his peers and colleagues.
Following our quick meet-up in Chapter 431, we, Class 1-A, learn about a villain wreaking havoc with his quirk. Instantly, we spring into action, racing towards the hotspot. As I don my incredible armored suit, it becomes apparent that I can easily keep pace with my mighty hero comrades during our high-speed dash to the scene. To my own surprise, I even managed to match Iida and Bakugo’s speed! Although we didn’t end up clashing with the criminal, in a single scene, Horikoshi demonstrated that with this new suit, I remain an efficient hero – alleviating any concerns among fans.
7. Did Kaminari And Jirou End Up Together?
Sadly, No, But This May Change Very Soon
Similar to numerous action shonen manga enthusiasts, fans of My Hero Academia have found themselves deeply invested in the prospect of romantic relationships between characters. Consequently, many were left feeling let down when Chapter 430 failed to disclose any new official couples. One of the most widely favored pairings throughout the series was that of Denki Kaminari and Kyoka Jirou. Intriguingly, their hero agencies were strategically placed next to each other post-time skip – a detail that sparked speculation among astute readers, suggesting that these two characters could have ended up together romantically.
To everyone’s surprise and dismay, Chapter 431 unequivocally clarifies that Kaminari and Jirou are not presently romantically linked. However, hope remains for those who wish for their union, as the chapter hints at a possible future for them. They express enjoyment of their buildings being close, reminiscent of when they sat beside each other in class. Thus, it’s still possible that this fresh development could rekindle Kaminari and Jiro’s relationship, potentially leading to them becoming a couple soon. Even if they don’t, at least the confirmation brings closure to fans.
8. Did Deku And Uraraka End Up Together?
Yes, They Just Needed A Bit More Time
In the world of “My Hero Academia”, it’s widely agreed that the romantic connection between Izuku Midoriya and Ochacho Uraraka is the most beloved pairing, surpassing Kaminari and Jiro’s in popularity. The series has consistently built their characters’ growth around their mutual affection for each other, making many fans anticipate a confirmation of their relationship by Chapter 430. However, this chapter failed to provide any clarity on whether they had confessed or ended up together, leaving fans feeling let down. This was all the more frustrating given that Chapter 429 seemed to hint at something significant happening between them.
In the extra chapter, it’s clear that Horikoshi was fully cognizant of the controversy since the unresolved plot point serves as the primary conflict and is central to the story. Readers witness how Uraraka, with her busy life as a Pro Hero and Quirk counselor, hasn’t had the chance to reconnect with Deku, particularly after he received his new suit. Luckily, following Uraraka’s encounter with Himiko Toga in her dreams and Deku’s brief yet crucial chat with Bakugo, both characters come to understand that it’s essential not only to help others but also to live their lives as they choose. The chapter concludes with a heartwarming scene of Deku and Uraraka reuniting, which has generally pleased fans.
