Michel Ancel Says Beyond Good and Evil 2 Issues Were Caused by Problems Between Managers

As a seasoned gamer who has followed the tumultuous journey of Beyond Good and Evil 2 since its inception, I can’t help but feel a mix of sympathy and exasperation upon reading Michel Ancel’s recent interview. The game’s development woes have been well-documented, and it seems that internal strife between management has played a significant role in these delays.

In an unusual conversation, Michel Ancel revealed that conflicts within the leadership team were behind the challenges faced during the production of Beyond Good and Evil 2.

In a recent interview with Superpouvoir (French outlet), Ancel discussed in detail the progress and challenges of Beyond Good and Evil 2’s development. He also addressed the allegations of toxic leadership, stating that he rejects these claims as their source.

In BGE2, there were frequent conflicts among managers. The artistic director was always aiming to rework everything extensively, while the game director had a vision for a game based on randomly generated dungeons. I yearned for a space exploration theme instead. Unfortunately, we couldn’t find common ground and the game director steered the project towards different territories, as he mentioned.

Ancel went on to explain, “In such predicaments, teams can become disoriented, unsure of who’s in command and who’s making decisions. The role of the producer is to clarify things, but that didn’t transpire. Yves Guillemot had to step in to Montpellier to restore order, but it wasn’t sufficient, and the game director persisted in his obstinacy. When I learned from Libe that I was directing the game and demanding alterations, I felt as if I was about to suffocate. In my opinion, BGE2 is a project where I’ve never doubted a single decision.

2020 saw Michel Ancel depart from Ubisoft to take a break at a wildlife refuge, having experienced burnout during his game development work. However, within a week, allegations of toxic leadership by Ancel started surfacing, which he has consistently refuted ever since.

Currently, Ubisoft’s Beyond Good and Evil 2 is being actively worked on. After approximately two years, it started to gain momentum at the beginning of 2017. According to our sources, the game is still a few years away from completion. Keep an eye out for some exclusive information about the game towards the end of this week.
