If you’ve missed the latest gaming updates, here’s what happened: This past week has been tough for Xbox enthusiasts, with Microsoft cutting around 9,000 jobs across various departments and also scrapping numerous projects.
Although many might empathize with the workers who were let go, an executive at Xbox presents a unique perspective on how those suddenly unemployed could adapt, which is by leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI).
I want to say what we’re about to relay is a parody of some sort, but sadly, it’s not.
Xbox Producer “Best Advice” To Laid Off People Is To Use AI
On LinkedIn, through Aftermath, Matt Turnbull, the Executive Producer of Xbox Game Studios Publishing, shared a heartfelt post offering support to those who have been let go and are currently navigating difficult circumstances. He emphasized that they do not have to face these challenges on their own.
Turnbull proposes utilizing AI for various purposes such as networking, enhancing resumes, and providing emotional support during tough times. This isn’t a joke; he’s serious about it. In his own words, “I understand these kinds of tools can evoke strong reactions, but I feel it’s my responsibility to provide the best guidance possible under the given circumstances. I’ve been exploring ways to employ Language Model Large (LLM) AI tools, such as ChatGPT or Copilot, to lessen the emotional and mental burden associated with job loss.
Some of his advice on how laid-off employees use AI include:
Emotional Clarity & Confidence
Sure thing! “Since I’ve been let go, I’ve been grappling with feelings of self-doubt and imposter syndrome. Could we work together to find a positive angle on this experience that highlights my strengths and abilities?
Resume & Linkedin Help
one for AAA companies, one for platform/publishing positions, and one for startup or small studio leadership roles.”
“I’d like to provide you with my updated CV tailored specifically for AAA-level game development companies. Here it is!”
“I’ve prepared three distinct versions of my resume, one focused on platform and publishing opportunities within the gaming industry. Let me share this version with you.”
“I have created three targeted resumes to suit various positions in the gaming industry – one for startup or small studio leadership roles. Here’s the one that matches your requirements.
“Rewrite this resume bullet to highlight impact and metrics.”
Crafting my LinkedIn profile, I’d like to emphasize my distinctive leadership approach, the prestigious roles I have held, and my ambitious vision for the future of game development. Here, you’ll find insights into how I navigate challenges, inspire teams, and strive to create immersive gaming experiences that captivate players worldwide.
There’s also advice on networking and career planning, but you get the gist.
In simpler terms, while Turnbull acknowledges that no AI tool can replace human voice or personal experiences, his advice might come across as insensitive considering that AI is contributing to the layoffs happening currently. It appears that either Turnbull recognized his mistake or someone else highlighted its absurdity, since the post was subsequently removed.
One report suggested that Microsoft is making an effort to substitute developers at Halo Studios with artificial intelligence.
Additionally, it’s been reported that a specific Xbox studio, established over two decades ago, may be shifting towards providing support roles instead of primary development projects. This change doesn’t seem promising for the future of its team members.
Let’s hope the next major news from Xbox is a good one.
