As a seasoned flight simulator enthusiast with over two decades of virtual aviation under my belt, I must say that the upcoming Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has me positively giddy! The prospect of stepping out of my cockpit and taking a leisurely stroll on an aircraft carrier or exploring the scenic paths of my favorite mountains is absolutely exhilarating.

2024’s edition of Microsoft Flight Simulator will give players an unprecedented freedom, enabling them to disembark a flight and explore locations at their leisure. This groundbreaking feature, which allows for on-foot navigation, is poised to distinguish Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 from its predecessors in the venerable series.

At the Xbox Games Showcase held in June 2023, the latest addition to the well-known flight simulation series was unveiled. This year’s event featured Asobo Studio revealing a new gameplay trailer and release date for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, which is scheduled for launch on November 19.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Will Let Players Take a Hike

Although many have praised this game as the most realistic sequel since its unveiling, it seems that the developers may have underestimated the scale of their vision. This is hinted at by a recent interview with Jorge Neumann, Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, who disclosed some extraordinary features in the upcoming version. For instance, players will be able to leave a plane upon landing and explore on foot – from walking along your preferred mountain trail to your favorite mountain hut, to sitting by the lake and witnessing the sunset.

In this new game, players won’t only traverse on solid ground, but they’ll also be able to set foot on ships, much like aircraft carriers, as suggested by industry veteran Neumann. He described the sensation of walking around on these floating platforms as akin to a first-person shooter environment. To create this unparalleled sense of scale and game world intricacy, they’re importing terrain data from Bing Maps. Interestingly, the previous game entry had already incorporated a similar feature, enabling players of Microsoft Flight Simulator to locate their real-life homes in the game.

You have the opportunity to physically traverse your preferred mountain trail leading to a cozy hut nestled among the peaks; unwind by the lake’s edge; and witness the breathtaking sunset.

In contrast to their previous work, Asobo Studio is taking extra precautions to refine the data for the upcoming sequel, with Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 expected to offer more intricate landscapes, as well as a greater degree of realism in terms of plant life and wildlife. This enhanced detail is largely due to machine learning techniques employed to populate their digital terrain map, serving as the game world’s height field. However, these methods sometimes necessitate manual adjustments, such as removing a forest from an area that doesn’t have one in reality, according to Neumann. Overall, this technology aims to provide Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 with an unprecedented blend of scope, detail, and immersion that no other flight simulation game has yet to achieve.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Will Have a Smaller Install Size Than MFS 2020

In a significant advancement, the way the next version of Microsoft Flight Simulator (MFS), specifically MFS 2024, handles asset streaming has shifted towards cloud-based technology. This means that unlike its predecessor, which required around 400–500GB of storage space, MFS 2024 will only need about 50GB or less. However, it’s not yet clear if the developers will provide an option for users with poor internet connections or those who prefer offline gaming to install the entire game locally. Given that most complex AAA simulation games require a powerful CPU for optimal performance, MFS 2024 is anticipated to be no exception and will likely demand a high-end CPU for the best gaming experience.
