The series began in 1982, originally for IBM computers, and has grown to include over a dozen titles in its 43-year run. However, releases have become less frequent since *Microsoft Flight Simulator X* came out in 2006.

The newest installment in the series, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, is officially coming to PlayStation 5 on December 8, 2025, as revealed during the September 24 PlayStation State of Play presentation. While the original PC and Xbox versions had some initial loading time problems, the game was praised for its stunning graphics and innovative features like landscape streaming – a big improvement over the 2020 release. You can pre-order the PlayStation 5 version now, and virtual reality fans will be happy to hear that PlayStation VR2 support is also being developed for the game.
