To start the new year, much like how it ended in 2024, Microsoft is carrying out job cuts across various departments, including sales, security, and gaming, as per a recent report by Business Insider.
According to Business Insider’s sources, employees began receiving layoff notices on Tuesday. Microsoft, in response, described the layoffs as “small,” without providing specific numbers affected.
In January 2024, Microsoft made the decision to dismiss 1,900 employees from its gaming division following the completion of its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Throughout the year, additional layoffs occurred through studio closures and other large-scale redundancies, with 650 people being let go in September 2024. Microsoft also closed four studios in May 2024, among them Arkane Austin and Tango Gameworks. However, Tango Gameworks was eventually acquired by Krafton and reopened.

Approximately 16,000 individuals were laid off from jobs in the video game industry last year, spanning more than 160 companies. In just the first 15 days of 2025, there have been at least 10 reported layoffs and closures, with known figures suggesting over 160 people affected so far. Preliminary estimates indicate that the actual number could be significantly higher, surpassing 200 individuals.
