During a recent interview, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s Vice President for ‘Next Generation’, shared that the tech giant is striving to combine Xbox and Windows to deliver an upgraded, user-friendly, and far more entertaining portable gaming experience.
He highlighted that the tech giant has been developing a top-tier operating system for twenty years, yet this OS is predominantly limited to ‘the console’. The aim is to significantly improve the efficiency and user-experience of Windows-based handheld gaming devices by integrating the robustness and flexibility of Windows with the gaming-centric functionalities and interface of Xbox.
‘Innovating for a Long Time’
For quite some time now, whispers about an Xbox portable game console have been spreading rapidly. Given the surge in popularity of handheld gaming devices worldwide, there’s been a strong anticipation that Microsoft (Team Green) might venture into this specific market segment. However, representatives from Xbox have generally been reserved in sharing information about it.
At a recent event reported by The Verge, Microsoft’s Jason Ronald discussed the upcoming integration of Xbox and Windows. This merger is expected to significantly enhance the user experience on portable devices, which have previously been limited by the clunky and occasionally glitchy interface of Windows on smaller screens, as seen on devices like the ASUS ROG Ally (and Ally X).
Ronald explained:
For quite some time now, we’ve been spearheading innovation within the console gaming market. As we collaborate with other industry players, our goal is to transfer the innovations we’ve nurtured and created in the console realm to both PC and handheld gaming platforms.
We’re aiming to merge the top-tier features of Xbox with Windows, as we’ve spent two decades crafting a superior operating system. However, it’s been confined to the console up until now. Our goal is to find ways to share these experiences for gamers and developers across the expansive Windows platform.
Many prefer the Steam Deck due to its SteamOS, which prioritizes gaming over other tasks, in contrast to the multi-tasking oriented design of the Windows 11 implementation typically found on handheld gaming devices.
Translation: All Windows 11 devices offer increased versatility and inclusivity, however, the user experience as a whole could be improved. Navigating with the standard Windows interface on a screen size between 7 inches to 8 inches can sometimes be frustrating.
Ronald summed it up:
At the end of the day, our goal is to make Windows great for gaming on any device.
In essence, the Xbox’s operating system is constructed upon the foundation of Windows. This means that a significant amount of framework we developed for consoles can be applied to personal computers (PCs), thereby enhancing the top-tier gaming experience across various devices.
Maybe this mission will help to make handheld gaming devices seem more akin to traditional gaming handhelds in the future, rather than small laptops with gaming capabilities.
