Microsoft has introduced a new feature for its PlayFab platform that lets players continue their games on different devices. Initially, this cross-save functionality will work between Xbox consoles and Steam. PlayFab, which is part of Microsoft’s Azure services, offers game developers tools to create, launch, and manage online multiplayer games and player data.
Allowing players to continue their progress on different gaming platforms isn’t a new idea, but it’s always been tricky for game developers to set up. To make cross-progression work, the game needs to connect all its versions and keep them updated together. Some popular games, like *Hades* and *Final Fantasy 14*, have managed to do this successfully. However, because it can be expensive and complex, many developers choose not to offer this feature.
Microsoft’s Cross-Save Service Could Be a Big Quality-of-Life Improvement for Gaming
Microsoft’s PlayFab is making it simpler for players to carry their game progress across different platforms. Their new cross-save feature connects progress to the game itself, not to a specific device or account, so players can pick up where they left off on any platform. Currently, developers can test this feature in preview, with support for transferring progress between Xbox, Steam, and certain other PC game stores.
The upcoming Xbox ROG Ally has many excited about the future of handheld gaming. Because it works with Steam, a feature allowing progress to carry over between platforms could let players seamlessly continue their PC games on the go. Currently, the biggest drawback is that players may still need to buy games separately for each platform to use this feature, unless they’re already part of the Xbox Play Anywhere program.
PlayFab’s cross-save feature is great because it automatically protects against and fixes damaged save files. Microsoft explains that it keeps game versions consistent across different platforms and lets players move their progress seamlessly. Plus, it works whether players are online or offline. If someone plays without an internet connection, their progress is saved and then automatically updated on all their devices as soon as they reconnect.
As a gamer, I was really excited to hear about Microsoft’s new play history feature. Basically, it keeps all my game data synced across my Xbox, PC, and even the mobile app – super convenient! Hopefully, this will make it easier for developers, especially the smaller ones, to add cross-progression to their games. That way, I can jump between my console, PC, and phone without losing my progress – it would make gaming on the go so much smoother and more enjoyable.
