Midnight Society Lays Off 50% of Dev Team Following Dr Disrespect Drama

As a longtime follower and supporter of the gaming industry, I find myself deeply saddened by the recent news about Midnight Society and DEADROP. The impact of such a significant workforce reduction is far-reaching, not just for the studio, but for the entire gaming community.

It’s been announced that Midnight Society, developers of DEADROP, a unique vertical shooter game, have had to let go around half of their team members due to unforeseen circumstances. Midnight Society gained significant recognition about three years ago when it was disclosed that Guy ‘Dr Disrespect’ Beahm is one of the studio’s co-founders.

Afterward, the contentious inventor contributed significantly to establishing Midnight Society’s reputation and drew players into the DEADROP realm, which some questioned as genuine due to its reliance on NFTs. Lately, accusations against Dr Disrespect have led the studio to reduce its workforce by half, affecting half of its development team.

Knock On Impact

A message from Midnight Society’s Discord server shared that Robert ‘fourzerotwo’ Bowling, one of the co-founders, clarified.

Hey there, fellow fans! Over the past few months, we’ve been navigating some unforeseen hurdles together. In order to adjust, thrive amidst these transformations, and ensure the longevity of Midnight Society, DEADROP, and our promise of delivering cutting-edge gaming adventures, we’ve had to take a tough step – streamlining our operations. This means we’re unfortunately saying goodbye to some team members as part of this process. We appreciate your understanding and continued support during these challenging times.

He went on to stress that DEADROP is still set to be released in 2025 and that the team will spend time compiling revised plans and a fresh roadmap. However, the vast majority of the comments posted in response to this message stood in solidarity with Dr Disrespect, the disgraced streamer who recently admitted to inappropriately messaging a minor on Twitch in 2017.

One user wrote, ‘Hopefully the entire company shuts down fully, jumping to conclusions on Doc.’

A different user pointed out Cody Conners, the ex-Twitch worker who ignited this whole controversy back in June by publicly announcing Dr Disrespect’s permanent ban on Twitch.

Excellent work, @evoli! Regrettably, many individuals now struggle to support their families due to your eagerness to participate in matters where you initially had no connection. This brief moment of recognition will likely go down as the most unfortunate and unwarranted in history.

When Dr Disrespect’s exposures came out, it was suggested that he was merely an influencer for Midnight Society and nothing more. The worry now is that his influence as an influencer was so significant that DEADROP may flop disastrously, as the majority of people participating were primarily doing so due to Dr Disrespect.
