Stephen King’s “Carrie” stands as one of the darkest and most impactful classic horror films, leaving fans intrigued about Mike Flanagan’s interpretation of the chilling storyline. Now, this skilled filmmaker and TV producer is disclosing his thoughts when he was offered to create a “Carrie” television series, while also providing some insights into the show’s anticipated narrative.
Originally directed by Brian De Palma in 1976, the version of “Carrie” that’s most well-known exists. However, it’s worth noting that this chilling tale about Carrie White (portrayed by Sissy Spacek), her telekinetic abilities, and her wicked mother Margaret (Piper Laurie) has been adapted into films on three separate occasions. After the initial release left audiences spellbound, an adaptation aired as a TV film in the late 90s, featuring Angela Bettis as Carrie. In 2013, a remake of “Carrie” was disappointing to many, with Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore portraying mother and daughter roles. Now, Mike Flanagan is bringing this horror classic to the small screen.
Mike Flanagan Explains Why He Almost Turned Down Amazon Prime Video’s Carrie And Shares More Details

During an interview with Variety, Mike Flanagan shared the initial reaction he had when Amazon asked him to create a television adaptation of “Carrie.” Specifically, he stated:
Currently, we’re working on the “Carrie” series, and it was this project that began when Amazon suggested it. At first, I wondered, “Why? It’s already been made.” But then, I discovered the reasoning behind it, and it really piqued my curiosity.
Flanagan went on to explain that when he shared his unique plan and script outline with Stephen King, the esteemed writer found it intriguing as a fresh take on the narrative. King expressed enthusiasm about seeing how the story would unfold, saying, “I’m eager to see where this leads.
Flanagan clarified that both the original Carrie movie and his TV series share similar themes: coming-of-age and bullying. Yet, he aimed to create something different, making sure the protagonist’s progression resonates in today’s world. To achieve this, he integrated the influence of technology into the series narrative. He also pointed out the chilling scene at the start of the original Carrie where Carrie’s classmates mock her in the locker room, a moment that is deeply etched in the memory of those who have seen the 1976 horror film. Although he did not reveal any plot details, he hinted that technology’s impact on society will be reflected in the series.
Our project is far beyond just Carrie White. I’m not able to discuss the specifics of what we’re working on, but rather clarify what we’re choosing not to do. We’re not revisiting the narrative as it has been previously presented, and our focus isn’t solely on telekinesis.
During another interview, the filmmaker also shared the challenging process of selecting the lead actor. Contrary to previous speculations that Milly Shapiro would portray the strong yet solitary high school student, it was Summer H. Howell who ultimately landed the principal role.
Flanagan, known for crafting chilling, emotional, and imaginative horror tales, is an ideal candidate to produce the upcoming Carrie TV series. Not only does he have a knack for King’s work, but he also happens to be a devoted fan himself. He has previously written and directed the film adaptation of King’s poignant and ominous short story The Life of Chuck, set to hit theaters on June 6th, 2025. Additionally, Flanagan is the mind behind Doctor Sleep, the 2019 sequel to The Shining. Given his skills and familiarity with King’s material, there’s no doubt that Carrie will be a smashing success.
Following the 2013 remake of Carrie, which didn’t bring much freshness to the narrative, fans can look forward to discovering something novel in Flanagan’s series. At this point, there isn’t a release date, but given its distinctive interpretation of the chilling classic, it seems the wait will be justified.
