From the very beginning, during their car trips and the casual exchanges they have afterwards, the relationship between Mindcop and Linda has all the hallmarks of a classic buddy cop duo. This dynamic is so compelling that it immediately draws you in.
Although Mindcop predominantly takes on the major tasks, it’s refreshing to note that Linda would offer her thoughts and evaluations when appropriate, even though she initially seems reserved in her speech.
In the story, there are two primary investigators, but let’s take a moment to touch on some other characters as well, particularly a few of the camp dwellers, and examine their complexity compared to the intricate web of this ongoing murder mystery.
In this portrayal, every character is skillfully depicted: Officer Kenneth’s shy demeanor, the tense dynamic between Olivia and Sean, among others. Initially, it might be hard to discern their weaknesses that make them seem susceptible to being viewed as possible suspects.
From the very start, whether it’s during their vehicle journeys or casual exchanges, the interaction between Mindcop and Linda has an immediate buddy-cop feel to it, making you immediately captivated by their relationship.
Rather than detailing their individual characteristics, it’s best for you to explore that section of the game personally from the third day onwards as the game becomes quite revealing and could spoil key elements if experienced prematurely.

As I neared the conclusion of my first gaming session, I stumbled upon some overlooked connections among certain characters – details I should’ve noted earlier. However, these missed ties didn’t significantly impact my primary goal: unmasking the murderer.
Surfing Through Truths, Lies And Uncertainty
In the realm of detective video games, Mindcop distinguishes itself by offering more than just traditional point-and-click gameplay. Two exceptional elements, Mindsurfing and the Sea of Thoughts, set it apart, enriching its unique position amidst an array of other outstanding detective games.
Mindsurfing is a puzzle-based minigame that occurs when you choose to ‘mindsurf’ a character, with gameplay functioning similarly between Tetris and Tic-Tac-Toe.
Looking back, it might seem that Mindsurf and Sea of Thoughts serve primarily for gameplay, but in reality, they enrich the storyline significantly and, more crucially, maintain your interest throughout the game.
With the Mindcop’s four distinctly colored mental ammunition (Mind Bullets), arrange matching-hued pathways consisting of three elements each, horizontally, vertically, or diagonally, to trigger chains and maintain the clock running, enabling him to reach the final line.
Additionally, finishing more segments of Mindsurfing increases your opportunities to enhance each color, making the bullets pack a greater punch. This results in receiving extra playtime due to successful combos.
However, keep in mind that Mindsurf gets spiced up with new modifiers in the mix, such as ‘Stressors’ disrupting your chains at any given moment unless you have Stress Barriers.
At a glance, it might appear straightforward, but upon closer inspection, you’ll find intricacy that requires careful navigation due to its increasing challenge level, which puts your reaction skills to the test on occasion.
This particular gaming element isn’t just about testing your alertness, but it significantly contributes to crafting the unique essence the game requires. It also serves as an innovative tool for storytelling, enhancing the overall experience.
It’s important to note that you can adjust Mindsurfing to suit your preference, or even disable it altogether in the settings. If it’s enabled, though, you’ll need to give it a try at least once, and the effectiveness will be based on your performance with the bullets.
If things go well, you’ll later gain entry into the game’s Sea of Thoughts, its second significant aspect.
After finishing a Mindsurf, you’ll gain entry to three primary paths: Reality, Doubt, and Deception. Each path is unique, but the Doubt path is certain to perplex you the most.
It’s interesting to note that they could all be mental states such as memories, thoughts, or feelings of a character, which provide depth when analyzing each suspect and understanding their role in the case.
This new perspective reveals more about the character’s qualities and behavior, making it easier for you to assess them. Particularly significant is its role in helping you narrow down the potential suspects on the last day.
Reflecting back, it’s easy to assume that Mindsurf and Sea of Thoughts were simply included for gameplay, but they actually enrich the storyline significantly and, more crucially, keep me hooked.
Many players find Mindcop straightforward to learn due to several reasons. The main challenges lie in handling the time management system and deciding to jot down extensive character details.
Not So Trigger Happy Detective
In your initial gameplay of Mindcop, it’s unlikely that you’ll complete it straight away. Much like my experience, you may struggle to identify the culprit, or progress smoothly without getting distracted.
To provide some additional insight, I should note that the game doesn’t follow a traditional linear path. Instead, it often leads you in circles due to its recurring false leads, or red herrings. If you enjoy delving into every potential scenario, these red herrings can disrupt your investigation’s flow.
As a detective within this virtual world, I’ve got five in-game days on my hands to crack the murder case. Crucially, each day grants me approximately seven hours, but keep in mind that time spent gathering clues, conversing with suspects, and exploring environments will chip away at those precious hours. And let’s not forget the occasional detour to unexplored locations too!
It’s crucial that you use those seven hours wisely, focusing carefully, and applying sound reasoning to determine which hints and proofs help unravel the mystery.
Given that certain decisions can consume a significant portion of your available time, they subtly hinder and restrict your ability to advance freely within the game’s daily routines.
If you fail to uncover the murderer by the last day, the narrative loops back to the start, a twist that may frustrate some readers despite my earlier explanation about the time management aspect.
Additionally, starting over from scratch won’t rekindle your enthusiasm for a fresh gameplay experience.
Instead of replaying the entire game feeling tedious, I found myself quite content as I played through it again on the Steamdeck, multitasking by jotting down notes on my phone simultaneously. Surprisingly, I managed to reach the conclusion swiftly and enjoyed a satisfying ending.
Despite its flaws being quite prominent, it’s worth emphasizing that this piece offers a rich depth to its narrative. The characters, the plot development, and the innovative gaming mechanics all come together in such a way that they captivate you, making you eager to experience it once more on your subsequent playthroughs.
After enjoying Life is Strange: Double Exposure, I must say that another game, Mindcop, has filled the gap in my heart for a genuine detective whodunit experience. Just as Disco Elysium did a few months ago.
