At Build A Rocket Boy, things haven’t been smooth sailing ever since before the MindsEye launch, and it seems like the situation is just deteriorating further.
In late June, the developer distributed notices of potential job losses to employees, initiating a consultation phase prior to any large-scale dismissals, as mandated by UK legislation.
It emerged just a day ago that the layoffs might be broader than initially assumed, as it appears that the entire 300-strong development team could potentially be impacted, based on certain LinkedIn updates posted by the employees.
According to reports, MindsEye director and Build A Rocket Boy Leslie Benzies appears to be pushing forward with his plans, which include potentially re-launching the game, despite the possibility that a significant number or even most of its developers could face layoffs.
Trying For A Redemption Arc
The information originates from two unidentified sources within Build A Rocket Boy, who spoke to IGN, claiming that Benzies recently communicated with his team via a brief video conference.
It seems he used the occasion to point fingers at “hidden enemies within and without” for the collapse of MindsEye, and expressed confidence that Build A Rocket Boy would recover from its setbacks and make a comeback by re-launching the game.
It’s not just Benzies who, within the company’s ranks, has propagated conspiracy theories regarding the game’s unfavorable response, and there have been allegations that the company resorts to automated accounts (bots) for posting favorable reviews about the game online.
Based on information from IGN, it appears that the developers of MindsEye are hoping for a comeback and future success within the studio. However, if the entire team is threatened with layoffs, it’s unclear whether the game will be able to fulfill its post-launch plans on schedule, or at all.
After receiving criticism from Alex Hernandez, voice actor of the game’s main character Jacob Diaz, Build A Rocket Boy has released its third update since launch, as a response to MindsEye being initially released in an unsatisfactory condition.
As a dedicated gamer, if by some miracle Benzies’ vision for MindsEye becomes a reality and the company manages to bounce back, it could potentially echo the remarkable comebacks we’ve seen in games like No Man’s Sky or Final Fantasy XIV – a triumphant return that would be nothing short of incredible. However, I must confess, it seems extremely improbable to me, given the dire state of affairs affecting most of Build A Rocket Boy’s team and their employment prospects.
