Mojang announced a sequel to the popular Minecraft Dungeons, with Minecraft Dungeons 2 currently slated for release in 2026. Since its debut in 2011, Minecraft has become the best-selling video game ever, expanding beyond its original form with various versions and spin-off games. These spin-offs include adventure games like Minecraft: Story Mode and strategy games like Minecraft Legends. However, Minecraft Dungeons has consistently been a fan favorite among the franchise’s many offshoots.
Back in 2020, Mojang surprised us all with Minecraft Dungeons – a totally different way to play Minecraft! Instead of building, it’s an action-packed dungeon crawler where you explore the familiar Minecraft world and fight monsters. Basically, you’re running around, slashing baddies in that classic pixelated style, all to take down this big bad guy called the Arch-Illager. They’ve kept adding tons of new stuff to it since launch – new dungeons, weapons, you name it. And now, Mojang just announced that Minecraft Dungeons is coming back, which is awesome!
Minecraft Dungeons 2 Is Launching in 2026
On March 21st, Mojang revealed the first trailer for Minecraft Dungeons 2. The trailer shows that the new game is a sequel to Minecraft Dungeons, taking place sometime after the original’s story. It depicts the main village in ruins, hinting at new locations like the Deep Dark. Minecraft Dungeons 2 is planned for release on current-generation consoles, Nintendo Switch, and PC in 2026.

Even the short clips from the Minecraft Dungeons 2 trailer hint at a lot of possible story developments. The announcement of Dungeons 2 suggests players will face a new villain following the events of the first game. The appearance of the Deep Dark area likely means we’ll see enemies similar to the Warden, the powerful creature found in that underground biome in Minecraft. Plus, the trailer ends with a shot of a strange portal found in Minecraft’s Ancient Cities, which will probably be a key part of the story in Dungeons 2.
Minecraft Dungeons 2 appears to be a new installment designed to build upon the established story of the Minecraft universe. The original Minecraft Dungeons took familiar elements from Minecraft – creatures like Illagers and locations like The End – and wove them into its own narrative, allowing players to learn more about the world. Mojang also previewed the upcoming Tiny Takeover update, which will introduce baby versions of familiar mobs like sheep, turtles, and chickens.
