Minecraft: Every Feature Revealed for the Mounts of Mayhem Update So Far

Mojang recently finished its yearly Minecraft presentation. Even though the popular mob vote is over, the developers revealed plenty of new content for players. They revisited the upcoming Copper Age update – adding even more uses for copper – and then announced “Mounts of Mayhem,” the final major update planned for 2025. This update focuses on letting players ride different mobs, and while it doesn’t currently expand on existing rideable creatures, it promises exciting new features for fans who enjoy exploring the world from atop a mob.

Minecraft: Mounts of Mayhem’s Features So Far

The Nautilus Mob

One of the biggest additions in the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update is the nautilus, a brand new creature that lives underwater. Mojang has been hinting at this for years with the nautilus shell item, and now players can actually ride them! The nautilus lets you move much faster and breathe freely while underwater. You can tame and breed these creatures by feeding them pufferfish, and even give them armor for protection or just to customize their look – similar to how horses work in Minecraft.

The size of the nautilus and the fact that you can control it aren’t realistic – it’s similar to the idea they once had of frogs eating fireflies. However, like many things in Minecraft, these creative choices have led to some fun and interesting results.

The Zombie Nautilus

It’s not just players who are getting new mounts! Now, zombie nautiluses can appear, and drowned zombies can ride them, just like players do. While a lone zombie nautilus isn’t aggressive, combining it with the already dangerous drowned – who can throw tridents while riding – is a powerful threat. To help players defend themselves, they can now equip their nautiluses with armor.

Zombie Horses

This update introduces a new creature: the zombie horse! Players have been able to find skeleton horses for a while now, but the zombie horse has always been limited to Creative mode – until now. Mojang is finally adding zombie horses to Survival mode, letting zombies ride them! These horses are friendly, meaning players should be able to separate them from their zombie riders. However, they’re sensitive to sunlight and will burn, so you’ll need to take extra care of them. It’s possible Mojang will eventually allow players to cure them, just like zombie villagers, but that’s just a guess for now.

The Spear

The spear is the newest major addition to Mounts of Mayhem in *Minecraft*. Just like in real life, it’s perfect for fighting while riding a mount – players can now stab enemies as they speed by on horseback or with an elytra. It also works well as a longer-reaching weapon when fighting on foot. The spear’s damage actually *increases* with the player’s speed, making it ideal for players who like quick attacks and retreats. With the addition of the mace last year, it’s clear Mojang is continuing to focus on improving combat. This makes us wonder what other weapon updates they might release in the future.

While the initial reveal of Mounts of Mayhem was impressive, Mojang might have more surprises in store. There’s still a lot of potential for additional mount-related features in *Minecraft*, including:

  • Horseshoes that improve a horse’s speed or jumping ability
  • Armor for camels, pigs, and happy ghasts
  • New fence gates for corrals or barn doors for better mount housing
  • Saddlebags for horses and camels

It’s unclear if these features will actually happen, but fans shouldn’t have to wait much longer to learn more about what’s included in the upcoming Mounts of Mayhem update. Mojang intends to release it before the end of 2025, meaning we’ll likely hear details about it within the next month or so.
