Nintendo has a knack for distinctive marketing strategies, and before the release of Switch 2, they’ve struck a significant agreement with the Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball club, to display advertisements on their uniforms. This collaboration marks a continuation of a long-standing relationship between the developer and the team, one that is being rekindled ahead of what might be one of the most impactful console launches in recent years.
The Mariners Have “Leveled Up” Their Jerseys, But Some Fans Don’t Love the Nintendo Ads
Today, it was announced that the Seattle Mariners will display advertisements for Nintendo on their uniforms starting from the upcoming season. During home games, the team will don red, rectangular Nintendo logo patches on their white jerseys. For away games, a larger patch promoting the Nintendo Switch 2 will be worn instead.
Back in ’92, as a gamer, I was thrilled when Hiroshi Yamauchi, Nintendo’s chairman at the time, joined forces with local Seattle businessmen to buy my beloved Mariners baseball team! Fast forward to 2004, and he passed his 54% stake to Nintendo of America. From then on, they were in the driver’s seat as majority owners until 2016, when they let go of most of their shares, but still held onto a 10% piece of the pie.
Though the Nintendo and Switch 2 emblems on the uniforms carry a touch of nostalgia, the online response from Mariners supporters has predominantly leaned towards negativity. Displeasure can be seen among users on platform X and the official Mariners subreddit, who are particularly bothered by the size of the patches, especially that of Switch 2, and the inconsistency with the team’s color scheme. There’s a growing discontent towards jersey advertisements in baseball as a whole, given that sponsor patches were only recently approved in 2023.
This year, it’s anticipated that the Nintendo Switch 2 will hit the market for approximately $400. Some Japanese experts predict that even with a higher price tag, Nintendo could still sell vast quantities of the console during its initial release period.
