As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the esports industry has truly come into its own this year. The sheer number of tournaments and the massive viewership they’re pulling in is simply astounding. It seems like every time I turn on my screen, there’s another record being broken!

Over the past few months, the esports sector has experienced a remarkable surge, with numerous tournaments emerging and captivating audiences numbering in millions. A recent report by Esports Charts provides concrete evidence of the industry’s success during Q3 2024, as approximately ten significant events attracted over one million simultaneous viewers at their peak.

In the past year or two, there have been numerous discussions about the long-term viability of the esports sector, yet it appears that the number of viewers hasn’t faced significant issues so far.

Mobile Madness

In Q3 of 2024, mobile games dominated the esports arena. The MPL tournament from Indonesia led the pack during this quarter, amassing an impressive 71.1 million viewing hours. This competition has outperformed other major events such as the LCK Summer, The International, and VALORANT Champs not only in terms of viewing hours but also peak concurrent viewers.

Over the past three months, nearly ten esports tournaments have attracted over a million simultaneous viewers, as per the statistics released by Esports Charts.

05 million viewers tuned in for IEM Cologne, while the Esports World Cup drew a maximum audience of 1.12 million (specifically its league portion). Climbing higher up the ladder, The International 2024 boasted 1.5 million peak viewers, and the LCK Regional Finals attracted the focus of 1.82 million esports enthusiasts simultaneously.

The sweet spot was in the mobile space, though.

During the mid-season, the EWC x MLBB Mid-Season Cup attracted approximately 2.3 million concurrent viewers at its highest point, and the MPL Indonesia followed closely with nearly 2.3 million viewers.

Time and again, mobile games demonstrate their strength in the esports industry. Their ease of access paired with a commonly appealing free-to-play structure allows them to attract vast numbers of players. Although the ‘Big Three’ are unlikely to lose their position any time soon, mobile games have certainly proven themselves worthy of being considered close to the top.
