
A dedicated team of modders recently started a remarkable project: bringing the world of Bethesda’s Morrowind into FromSoftware’s Elden Ring. This mod aims to recreate The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind within Elden Ring, offering a fresh, third-person perspective, and we’ve just received the latest news on their ambitious work.
InfernoPlus, a modder and YouTuber, shared a recent video update on the mod’s development. The video explained the progress made since the project was first announced and highlighted the contributions of other volunteer modders who joined the team.
The modder pointed out that the way NPCs were programmed in this version was already very close to how quirky they were in the original Morrowind game. I found that especially funny because it happened right after an NPC delivered a really stiff and unnatural line. Maybe I’m remembering the NPCs from Morrowind as being more charming than they actually were.
While it won’t be perfect, the system is currently functioning as expected, according to InfernoPlus. They also mentioned that the voices used for speech are just temporary – they’re using them as placeholders to test that everything is working correctly.
Development on other parts of the mod is progressing nicely. Items are starting to work, and you can now get a first look at the speech system and how your interactions affect NPC attitudes. Plus, you can now commit crimes like stealing and pickpocketing, which could ultimately land you in jail.
A major concern for modders is the game’s navigation meshes, or “navmeshes.” These are invisible to players but crucial for helping characters find their way around the world. As one modder put it, characters simply can’t move intelligently without them.
Okay, so things are progressing okay, but the navigation mesh – basically, how the characters move around the world – is a real pain point. Honestly, it’s the biggest thing stopping us from finishing the game right now, and I’m not even sure how we’re going to fix it. It’s the only part of the project that has me truly stumped, and there’s a chance we might not be able to solve it at all. I’m hoping we can figure it out, and I think it’s possible, but it’s definitely the one thing keeping me up at night.
Despite that challenge, the team still needs assistance. As they put it, this project is incredibly demanding! Recreating a game as large as Morrowind – and doing so within another huge game – is a massive undertaking, naturally.
