I was blown away when I discovered that Doom, an ’90s gaming legend, is playable on just about any screen-equipped device. Incredibly, modder Aaron Christophel even got this 1993 classic to run smoothly on a portable Anker Prime charging station.
The charging station is equipped with a Synwit SWM34S system-on-a-chip, boasting 8MB of internal RAM and 16MB of external flash memory. These components enable the playback of Doom on its integrated 200×480 LCD display.
As a gamer, I found the controls remarkably intuitive considering the limitations of the equipment at hand. To move forward or backward, all it takes is a simple twist of the dial. Pushing the dial in while rotating left or right will let me swivel, while a push without rotation gives me the power to shoot and open doors.
As a devoted enthusiast, I managed to bring the device back to life by connecting the debugging header to an external tool, without needing to tamper with its original internal hardware.
While it might not offer the most comfortable gaming experience for Doom, the mere ability to play it this way is quite remarkable on its own. Perhaps, in time, this method could even find its way onto platforms like Xbox.
