Highlights

  • H2M mod canceled by Activision a day before release, disappointing fans.
  • Fans, angered by sudden cancelation, raise objections and review-bomb Modern Warfare Remastered.
  • Activision’s action suspiciously timed with Steam sale and Black Ops 6 beta.

As a longtime Call of Duty fan, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of disappointment and disillusionment at the turn of events surrounding H2M. The mod, which promised to breathe new life into Modern Warfare 2‘s multiplayer content, was cruelly snatched away from us just a day before its release.

As a passionate gamer, I was all set to dive into H2M, the exciting modification that promised to merge Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer magic into the 2017 remaster of Modern Warfare 1. But just a day before its release, my excitement came crashing down with a cease and desist letter from Activision, effectively cancelling the project.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve been eagerly anticipating the launch of the new update for Call of Duty Modern Warfare Remastered, set for August 16th. But then, yesterday, in a heart-wrenching tweet, the developers shared some disappointing news – they’re forced to cease their operations. It feels like a double blow, considering the recent resurgence of interest in this mod on Steam over the past few days.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but notice that Activision seems to be focusing their attention on ensuring their latest releases grab the spotlight, possibly explaining why they might not be as enthusiastic about community modifications like H2M competing for our attention.

If you see a release of the H2M mod online for download, please avoid it and don’t trust it, as it’s become a way to spread malware.

The intended H2M Mod aimed to revitalize the multiplayer experience for Call of Duty fans by offering a fresh, updated version of Modern Warfare 2, effectively restarting their in-game accomplishments and advancement from scratch.

In essence, players would have been offered a traditional Call of Duty gaming style but without the feature to instantly unlock all items. This setup would encourage fans to keep coming back, as it preserves the original challenge they first enjoyed in 2009 – the same grind that initially captured their hearts.

Beyond just being upset about the unexpected cancellation, this announcement followed closely on the heels of a massive 50% discount offered on Steam for Modern Warfare Remastered, causing those who purchased the game primarily for the H2M mod during the sale to request refunds and urge others to do the same.

Was This A Pre-Planned Business Decision?

As a dedicated fan, it’s hard not to believe that Activision must have been aware of the impending mod and the enticing Steam sale, both of which significantly contributed to the remarkable rise of Modern Warfare Remastered on Steam’s Top Sellers list.

As a gamer, it feels like Activision decided to hold off on sending a cease and desist notice until after the sale was finalized. If that’s true, it’s a real slap in the face for their own fans. It’s not cool when a company profits from potentially releasing a mod only to burn it down later. But hey, Activision isn’t exactly new to negative headlines, right?

Indeed, for players to engage with this mod, they should have owned a genuine version of Modern Warfare 1 Remastered on Steam. This means that the popularity of the mod could have boosted the visibility and earnings for Activision, the game’s publisher.

Numerous theories abound regarding Activision’s aggressive move. Contrasting with Bethesda’s Next Gen Update for Fallout, which incidentally affected the Fallout: London mod, Activision’s choice appears to have been calculated and specifically aimed at H2M.

Many are anticipating the beta release of Black Ops 6 on August 30th. Given that H2M is set to launch two weeks prior, Activision’s strategy might successfully capture the full attention of all Call of Duty enthusiasts towards their forthcoming title.

Even though Activision is allowed to safeguard and restrict usage of their creative works (known as intellectual property), it’s still disappointing when a sudden cancellation occurs, leaving fans frustrated enough to give negative reviews en masse on platforms like Steam, in this case, Modern Warfare Remastered.

The Sad Fate Of H2M

It seems that the only logical explanation for such a cancellation would be if Activision is working on or planning to release a remaster of Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer. Although they did remaster the campaign in 2020, there hasn’t been any news about a multiplayer version since then.

Regardless of the fact that the project has been permanently abandoned, as it’s no longer in existence, we fervently wish that such a surprising move by a gaming company towards its community will never occur again.

Although the act was legally permissible, a significant number of people consider it ethically questionable, given the widespread assumption that Activision could have terminated the project earlier before its release.

At this point, all we’re left with is feeling sorrow for the now-defunct community initiative that sought to revitalize the beloved Call of Duty game, which so many of us pine for.
