Mongolian CS2 Team Makes History at Shanghai Major

As a fan who’s been following the esports scene for years, I must say, The MongolZ at the Perfect World Shanghai Major are making history! They’ve managed to do what no other Asian team has done before – qualify for the playoffs in a Major. It’s like watching a dream come true, especially considering their triumph at the Thunderpick World Championship just weeks ago.

At the Perfect World Shanghai Major, an extraordinary achievement by the Mongolian Counter-Strike 2 team, the MongolZ, is capturing everyone’s attention. This team from Asia has accomplished something never before achieved by any other Asian team, and it’s a feat that no global team has managed in over half a decade.

A mere few weeks ago, The MongolZ bagged their biggest prize money yet at the Thunderpick World Championship. However, an even more astonishing feat could potentially be within their grasp.

Job’s Not Done

In the Shanghai Major of Counter-Strike, The MongolZ earned a spot in the playoffs, making them the first Asian team to achieve this feat in Major tournaments since their inception in 2013. Historically, European teams have dominated the playoff field, with North and South American teams occasionally joining them. Previously, if an Asia-Pacific team made it to the playoffs, it was usually a squad from Australia. However, The MongolZ have broken this trend by becoming the first Asian team to reach the playoffs without being Australian.

At the playoffs of The MongolZ, they achieved something historically significant. Their pathway to the playoffs is unique, with the tournament using two 16-team Swiss rounds to decide who advances. Impressively, The MongolZ swept both the Initial Stage and Elimination Stage, defeating teams like Heroic, GamerLegion, MOUZ, and G2 Esports. It’s worth noting that no team has managed a similar 3-0 record in two Swiss stages at the same Major since Team Liquid did so at the FACEIT London Major in 2018. In fact, G2 also achieved this feat earlier at the ELEAGUE Boston Major, which was the first Major to employ the two Swiss stage system.

Suitably, The MongolZ qualified for the playoffs at the inaugural Counter-Strike Major held in Asia. The team’s rising star, the 19-year-old Sodbayar “Techno” Munkhbold, noted that the crowd has been a significant advantage for them. This edge is expected to grow as the tournament moves to the larger Shanghai Oriental Sports Center for the playoffs.
