As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and a dedicated gamer, I can confidently say that the prospect of a proper Wonder Woman game has me absolutely thrilled! The tantalizing glimpses we’ve had so far remind me of the excitement surrounding the release of the Batman: Arkham series – a benchmark in superhero gaming. If Monolith Productions manages to weave the high-fantasy elements of their Middle-earth games with a more mature tone, as hinted at, they’re bound to create something truly special.
There’s great anticipation for Monolith’s upcoming Wonder Woman game, despite its still being largely enveloped in secrecy. Marking the first substantial, contemporary Wonder Woman video game, it aims to elevate the character to the level of prominence currently enjoyed by Batman, who, together with Spider-Man, is arguably one of the most widely portrayed superheroes in the gaming world.
In anticipation for updates on the upcoming Wonder Woman game, fans are left to speculate based on two main influences: the Batman: Arkham series and Monolith’s Middle-earth duology. The epic fantasy elements and action-oriented gameplay of the latter might shape Wonder Woman, while the mature tone of the former could also play a significant role, if both intellectual properties are intended to coexist within the same narrative world. So, despite no official gameplay details for Wonder Woman being unveiled yet, there’s good reason to expect that this will be an impressive game from a team with proven talent in creating exceptional titles. Here’s hoping it paves the way for another crucial DC hero!
After Wonder Woman, Warner Bros. Needs to Push Out a Superman Game
A Superman Game Would Complete the DC Superhero Trifecta
It’s challenging to dispute that Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman stand out among the many remarkable characters created by DC Comics due to their exceptional abilities and influential roles within the universe. Beyond their in-universe competence, these three characters have a lasting impact on popular culture and broader media because of their deep thematic significance and enduring narrative appeal.
Batman represents human cunning, ingenuity, and willpower, his “Dark Knight” mantle cementing him as a terrifying force for order and justice. On the other hand, Superman and Wonder Woman are aspirational figures, true superhumans that are the unattainable pinnacle of what society should strive for. They work hard, but they also enjoy innate gifts, which makes their relationship with society fundamentally different from Batman’s. At the same time, Wonder Woman being steeped in the history of Themyscira while Superman is a corn-fed, blue-blooded American makes them polar opposites in some ways.
It’s only a matter of time before Superman gets his own well-deserved adaptation in video games, as Batman and Wonder Woman have already had great representations. Superman is one of DC Comics’ main three heroes, but what makes him truly special is his unique character traits, which could support a strong solo adventure. This adventure would differ significantly from both the Wonder Woman games and the Batman: Arkham series.
Making a Superman Game Would Be Tough, but Worth It
Designing a game featuring Superman is often tricky due to his immense powers. When a character can easily overpower most physical threats with just a casual gesture, it disrupts the balance that’s crucial for engaging gameplay. However, television series, movies, and comics have been skillfully navigating this issue for some time now, so there’s no reason why a video game couldn’t do the same. It might require a bit of creative thinking to pull off.
A Superman video game might need to deviate from the standard patterns of action-adventure games to be successful. Unlike characters such as Spider-Man or Batman, Superman wouldn’t typically engage in hand-to-hand combat with a mob of henchmen because only a few human and alien adversaries would pose any real challenge for him. Instead, the gameplay might focus less on combat and more on other aspects, though this would necessitate creative thinking when designing the game. Regardless of the direction it takes, Warner Bros. should consider developing a Superman game sooner rather than later, given that their collection of superhero games is expanding.
