Monster Hunter: Catch This Huge Fish For A Unique Quest

Monster Hunter Wilds is not merely focused on slaying creatures bigger than your home; it also involves completing various tasks that demand you, the Hunter, to find scarce resources, such as catching a hard-to-find giant fish known as a whopper.

If you’ve finished all tasks assigned by Kanya up until Chapter 4-3, her next mission, “Catch of a Lifetime”, will involve catching a big fish that was mentioned earlier. This fish might not be as challenging as Rey Dau or the Black Flame, but catching it won’t be your usual fishing experience.

As a fishing enthusiast, I can tell you that catching this aquatic creature isn’t just a matter of using any old bait and waiting casually by the shore. Instead, you’ll need to venture into depths far beyond the confines of rock pools or rivers. Here’s your comprehensive guide on how to reel in this elusive underwater dweller.

Accept the Catch of a Lifetime quest

To ensure you’re ready for that big catch, don’t forget to acquire the “Catch of a Lifetime” mission from Kanya, starting from Chapter 4-3 and only after you’ve finished previous quests.

The Non-Player Character (NPC) can be located at the rear area of the Scarlet Forest Base Camp. Interestingly enough, this exact biome is where you’ll discover the object she has been searching for.

Kanya can be found at the back of the Scarlet Forest Base Camp.

Kanya will give you the “Tough Joint and Duster Rig fishing lures” as soon as you agree to the quest. Once you finish the “Catch of a Lifetime,” these items will be available for future use. You’ll need them to catch large fish.

Where to find a whopper in Monster Hunter Wilds

With all the necessary items provided by Kanya, it’s time for you to venture into the vibrant Scarlet Forest. You can reach Sector 17 by quickly teleporting to the closest waypoint camp or using your Seikret for an automated route.

In this location, you’ll discover a large expanse of water that serves as a residence for some impressive fish, often referred to as whoppers. Armed with either a Tuff Joint or Duster Rig, provided by Kanya, cast your fishing line into the lake and be patient for a nibble.

If you’re finding it hard to catch a big fish, consider adjusting your timing and try visiting the same fishing spot during various times of the day and seasons while taking breaks at any convenient campsite, then coming back later.

How to catch a whopper

Because of their larger size and greater power, larger fish can easily snap your fishing line if you rush to reel them in. Instead, it’s important to exercise patience and avoid attempting to pull a struggling big fish in immediately.

Instead of keeping the directional keys constant, try adjusting them according to the fish’s swimming or turning movements. Eventually, the fish will halt its movement, providing an opportunity for you to begin reeling it in. Similarly, when larger fish break the water surface, they may threaten to snap your line. In such cases, you’ll need to act swiftly by pressing R2 or right-click to restrain them.

Follow this cycle several times consistently, and you’ll end up with either a Spearhead or a Gastronome Tuna, both items that are relevant to Kanya’s mission.

Spearhead and Gastronome Tuna can be found in the Scarlet Forest, both of which count as whoppers.
