Monster Hunter is getting a Magic: The Gathering collab, and I think I speak for all fans of cool lizard art when I say: Hell yeah

Most Magic: The Gathering players, aside from those who own Hasbro stock, have had a complicated reaction to the game’s recent crossovers. While the Lord of the Rings set was a hit, the fact that there are now six Magic cards featuring Dwight Schrute from The Office is… a lot to process.

The newest Secret Lair collection for Magic: The Gathering feels like a natural fit – almost inevitable, given Wizards of the Coast’s history of collaborations. The artists known for Magic’s iconic creatures have designed cards based on Monster Hunter, and the outcome is fantastic.

The new Magic: The Gathering collection, Secret Lair: Monster Hunter, is launching on December 1st. It features four sets of cards redesigned with themes from the Monster Hunter video game series. These cards will be available in both standard and foil versions, with the complete collection costing up to $560. Given Magic: The Gathering’s history of impressive dinosaur and dragon artwork, it’s no surprise the artists have done a great job adapting the iconic creatures from Capcom’s Monster Hunter.

It’s obvious the artists really understand the game: anyone familiar with fighting Kushala Daora with a bow will immediately see how difficult the hunter’s situation is on the ‘Kushala Daora’s Fury’ card.

The cards featuring spells and hunters have some beautiful artwork—especially a Yian Garuga card—but the real standouts are the two ‘The Monsters’ sets. Brock Grossman’s depiction of Rathalos, the series’ iconic monster, is suitably powerful, and Oxygen’s artwork captures Nergigante, the flagship monster from Monster Hunter: World, in a furious, wild state. It’s all really well done.

I’m not entirely sure some of the monster-to-Magic creature connections work well. For example, Wasitora’s power to create copies doesn’t really feel like the Nargacuga, but it’s hard to find good matches when you’re limited to a ‘Cat Dragon’ type of creature.

I realized a while ago that I enjoy Magic: The Gathering’s artwork more than the game itself, which saves me money. But that might be changing today.
