As a Monster Hunter Stories 3 fan, I’m really excited to learn there are 17 different mutations you can unlock! It’s not just about finding monsters, though. You actually have to help restore their habitats and find the endangered ones to really unlock their full potential. It sounds like a fun way to connect with the world and the monsters!
This guide will help you find all the different monster mutations in Monster Hunter Stories 3 and earn the “Mutated Monsters Report” achievement. We’ll cover every mutation available, what you need to unlock them, and explain the difference between variant and deviant mutations – so you know which ones you can encounter in the wild and which you can’t.
What are Variant Mutations and Deviant Mutations in Monster Hunter Stories 3
In Monster Hunter Stories 3, you can find 17 different mutations. Three of these create variations of common monsters, but the remaining 14 come from rarer, endangered species. You’ll unlock all of these mutations by fulfilling specific requirements as you work to restore the habitats of the monsters they’re based on.
There are 17 monsters in total, and they’re all considered mutations, but they fall into two main types: Variants and Deviants. The game’s Monsterpedia doesn’t clearly state which type each monster is, but knowing this distinction is important because it determines where and when you’ll find them in the game world.
Deviant mutations are only obtainable by hatching eggs. Variant mutations, however, can be found both in eggs and by encountering them directly in their natural habitats.
You can usually tell if a monster is a Deviant or Variant by checking its entry in the Monsterpedia. Here are some of the key differences to look for:
- Variants will have Ecology Notes while Deviants will not.
- The short description provided for Deviants will always refer to them as Deviant, while the entries for Variants will call them subspecies.
- The Anatomy/Parts portion of a Deviant’s Monsterpedia entry will always read No Parts Info, likely because you will never fight them yourself.
Monster Hunter Stories 3 Mutation List
We’ve organized the list of mutations from Monster Hunter Stories 3 to match the order they appear in the game’s Monsterpedia. We’ve also indicated whether each mutation is found by encountering monsters in the wild (Deviants) or hatching eggs (Variants), making it easier to find what you’re looking for.

How to Get Every Mutation in Monster Hunter Stories 3
Deadeye Yian Garuga
- Mutates from: Yian Garuga
- Mutation Requirement 1: Yian Garuga has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat containing 3 or more monsters that are the same rank as the Yian Garuga.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
Deadeye Yian Garuga is a special, stronger version of the Yian Garuga. It’s a fast and fiery Monstie with more health and attack power. However, it’s significantly less durable, having about half the defense of a normal Yian Garuga.
The Monsterpedia doesn’t show weaknesses for the Deadeye Yian Garuga, but you can find them by hatching one and checking its stats. Keep in mind that weaknesses can change depending on the monster’s type and elemental properties, so always check when you hatch a new Deadeye Yian Garuga.
Hellblade Glavenus
- Mutates from: Glavenus
- Mutation Requirement 1: Glavenus has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in habitats containing 4 or more monsters that have razor-sharp appendages.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
Great Izuchis, Magnamalos, Seregios, and Shogun Ceanataurs are monsters known for having incredibly sharp claws and blades.
Hellblade Glavenus is a faster, more aggressive version of the standard Glavenus, specializing in Fire-element attacks. It sacrifices some defense to gain extra health and significantly boost its attack power – essentially, it trades a strong defense for a powerful offense, prioritizing attack over protection.
Similar to other Deviant monsters, you need to hatch a Hellblade Glavenus to see what elements it’s weak to within the game.
Ivory Lagiacrus
- Mutates from: Lagiacrus, an endangered species unlocked after defeating the Invasive Plesioth.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Lagiacrus has an Ecosystem Rank of A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
The Ivory Lagiacrus is a Monstie that uses Thunder attacks and excels in speed. It’s strongest in attack power, with good health and speed, and decent defense.
The Ivory Lagiacrus is vulnerable to all damage types except paralysis, which it has some resistance to. It’s also fairly resistant to both thunder and water damage. However, it takes significantly more damage from dragon attacks and a little extra from fire. Normal and ice attacks have no special effect on it – it’s neither weak nor resistant to them.
Soulseer Mizutsune
- Mutates from: Mizutsune, an endangered species found after defeating the Invasive Shogun Ceanataur.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Mizutsune’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat containing at least 1 electricity-imbued monster that is a bitter rival of the Mizutsune.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
The Zinogre monster can be used to meet the second mutation requirement.
Regular Mizutsune have well-rounded stats, with most abilities being fairly equal. However, the Soulseer Mizutsune is stronger and has more health, but is less durable. It’s also a faster monster, categorized as Speed-Type instead of Technical-Type. Despite these changes, it still uses Water-based attacks, just like the original Mizutsune.
To find out what elements a Soulseer Mizutsune is weak to, you’ll have to obtain one and check its stats. These weaknesses can vary a little depending on if it has a second element, and what that element is.
Stygian Zinogre
- Mutates from: Zinogre, an endangered species found by defeating the Invasive Odogaron.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Zinogre has an Ecosystem Rank of A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
Stygian Zinogre is a monster that uses Dragon-element attacks and Technical-type moves. It’s incredibly strong offensively, boasting both high health and speed. Despite its power, its defenses are relatively weak, which keeps it balanced.
Stygian Zinogres are vulnerable to all types of status effects, particularly Blastblight and Darkness, no matter what form they take. While their weaknesses to elements like fire, water, and thunder will change depending on if they’re in their normal state, Dragon Shroud, or Battle Shroud, they are always strong against Dragon and Fire attacks.
Thunderlord Zinogre
- Mutates from: Zinogre, an endangered species found by defeating the Invasive Odogaron.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Zinogre has an Ecosystem Rank of S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains at least 1 rival of Zinogre that has enchanting purple fur.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
The Mizutsune monster will meet the second requirement.
Thunderlord Zinogre is a stronger, more powerful version of the Zinogre, specializing in Thunder element attacks. It hits incredibly hard and is quite fast, but isn’t very durable.
Zinogre is always a Thunder-type Monstie, but where you find its egg determines a second element it can have. This combination of elements affects what it’s weak to, so be sure to check its stats after it hatches to see its specific weaknesses.
Pink Rathian
- Mutates from: Rathian, an endangered species unlocked by defeating the Invasive Yian Garuga.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathian’s Ecosystem Rank is Rank B.
- Mutation Type: Variant
Pink Rathians and regular Rathians are quite alike in terms of their strengths and weaknesses. Both are Fire-type Monsties that favor quick, Speed-based attacks. They share the same vulnerabilities – they can be affected by most status effects except for burns and poison. Also, both are strong against fire, but take extra damage from thunder and dragon attacks.
Pink Rathians differ from regular Rathians in a couple of key ways. They have a little extra defense against Water attacks and aren’t affected by Ice – meaning they have no special weakness or resistance to it. To gain this, Pink Rathians have slightly lower defense overall, but they make up for it with increased attack power and health.
Dreadqueen Rathian
- Mutates from: Rathian, an endangered species unlocked by defeating the Invasive Yian Garuga.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathian’s Ecosystem Rank is Rank S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: The habitat contains 3 or more poisonous monsters.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
Okay, so I’ve been battling this Monstie, the Dreadqueen Rathian, and she’s seriously fast! She’s a Fire-type, and it turns out she’s a rarer, mutated version of the regular Rathian. What’s cool is she’s got a ton of health and attack power, and she’s pretty quick, but her defense isn’t the greatest. Basically, she hits hard and fast, but you can actually damage her if you focus your attacks.
Because the Dreadqueen Rathian is a special, mutated Monstie, its weaknesses to things like ailments or elements aren’t listed in the Monsterpedia. You’ll need to hatch a Dreadqueen Rathian or check your Monstie collection in the Stables to see its specific weaknesses.
Sand Barioth
- Mutates from: Barioth, an endangered species found after defeating the Invasive Khezu.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Barioth’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
Sand Barioth isn’t aligned with any particular element and primarily uses Technical attacks. It can handle Burn, Poison, and Darkness a little better than other ailments, but is vulnerable to everything else. In terms of elemental damage, it strongly resists Fire, has some resistance to Dragon, is somewhat weak to Thunder, and is very weak to Ice.
Similar to other mutated monsters, the Sand Barioth sacrifices some of its protective armor for increased attack power. Luckily, it maintains the same level of health and speed as a regular Barioth.
Green Nargacuga
- Mutates from: Nargacuga, an endangered monster unlocked by defeating the Invasive Nerscylla.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Nargacuga’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
The Green Nargacuga isn’t aligned with any specific element, but it’s known for its speed. It can take a little extra damage from Blast, Bleed, and Sleep, but is easily affected by all other status effects. In terms of elemental damage, it’s extremely vulnerable to Thunder, moderately weak to Fire, resistant to Ice, very resistant to Water, and unaffected by standard or Dragon-type attacks.
This Monstie has the same health and speed as a standard Nargacuga, but boasts a little more attack power and slightly less defense.
Silverwind Nargacuga
- Mutates from: Nargacuga, an endangered monster unlocked by defeating the Invasive Nerscylla.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Nargacuga’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: The habitat contains 2 or more monsters that control wind.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
Wind-controlling monsters include Great Izuchi, Legiana, and Paolumu.
Silverwind Nargacugas are a special, faster version of the Nargacuga monster, lacking any elemental powers. They’re stronger and have more health than both normal Nargacugas and Green Nargacugas, but they aren’t as durable – meaning they have lower defense.
Because the Silverwind Nargacuga is a special, mutated monster, its profile in the Monsterpedia won’t list any weaknesses to things like poison or elements. But, if you check its stats while it’s in your Stables, you will be able to see what elements it’s weak to.
Boltreaver Astalos
- Mutates from: Astalos, an endangered Monstie hidden behind the Invasive Seregios.
- Mutation Requirement 1: Astalos Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a thunder elemental area with 3 or more thunder elemental monsters.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
Boltreaver Astalos is a Monstie specializing in Technical attacks and the Thunder element. It’s a more powerful, mutated version of the standard Astalos, boasting increased attack power and health. However, like many Deviant monsters, it has a weaker defense compared to the original Astalos.
Okay, so if you’re hatching a Boltreaver Astalos as a Deviant, don’t bother checking the Monsterpedia for its elemental and ailment resistances! It’ll just show question marks. Instead, you have to go to the Stables and check the stats of your specific hatched Astalos to see what it’s weak to. It’s a little different with Deviants, but that’s how you find out!
Azure Rathalos
- Mutates from: Rathalos
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathalos’ Ecosystem Rank is A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
The Azure Rathalos is a more powerful version of the Rathalos, both being fire-based monsters. While similar to the standard Rathalos, the Azure Rathalos hits a bit harder but isn’t quite as durable.
Okay, so I’ve been fighting the Azure Rathalos a lot, and here’s what I’ve learned about its weaknesses. It’s not a huge weakness, but it takes a little extra damage from Paralysis, Sleep, Blastblight, Bleed, and Darkness. On the flip side, Poison and Burn don’t really do much. Elementally, Fire is a big no-no to use against it – it resists it hard. Thunder is okay, but Ice works pretty well. Dragon element, though? That’s where it really hurts! Water and just plain old physical attacks don’t really do extra or less damage, they’re just…normal.
Dreadking Rathalos
- Mutates from: Rathalos
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Rathalos’ Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains 4 or more Flying Wyverns.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
The Dreadking Rathalos is a powerful Monstie that uses Fire, similar to regular Rathalos and Azure Rathalos. While they share many traits, the Dreadking Rathalos stands out with significantly more health and attack power, but slightly lower defense. All three types move at the same speed.
Dreadking Rathalos is a special type of Rathalos, and unlike other monsters, its weaknesses aren’t listed in the Monsterpedia. You’ll need to check its specific weaknesses by looking at its details in your Stables.
Brute Tigrex
- Mutates from: Tigrex, the endangered monster hidden behind the Invasive Diablos.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Tigrex’s Ecosystem Rank is A.
- Mutation Type: Variant
The Brute Tigrex is a stronger, mutated form of the already rare Tigrex monster. Unlike some Tigrex, it doesn’t have an elemental attack, but focuses purely on physical power. It hits harder than a normal Tigrex, though it’s a bit more vulnerable to attacks itself.
Brute Tigrex is tough against Burn, Sleep, and Bleed effects, but it’s vulnerable to Poison and Blastblight. It’s especially weak to Paralysis and Darkness. Ice doesn’t affect it much, while Fire is a strong point for it. It has some resistance to Thunder, but is very weak to Water. Regular and Dragon attacks don’t have a special effect on it.
Grimclaw Tigrex
- Mutates from: Tigrex, the endangered monster hidden behind the Invasive Diablos.
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Tigrex’s Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in a habitat that contains 4 or more Power-Type monsters.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
The Grimclaw Tigrex is a special, more powerful version of the Tigrex monster in Monster Hunter Stories 3. It doesn’t have any elemental attacks and focuses on speed, boasting incredibly high attack and speed stats, along with good health. However, its defense is relatively low, making it a powerful but fragile opponent – a classic ‘glass cannon’.
Your Grimclaw Tigrex can gain special abilities depending on how it’s raised, potentially becoming strong against two different elements. After hatching one, be sure to check its stats to see which elements it resists.
Bloodbath Diablos
- Mutates from: Diablos
- Mutation Requirement 1: The Diablos or Black Diablos’ Ecosystem Rank is S.
- Mutation Requirement 2: Resides in Tarkuan’s Bountiful Dunes region when it contains Diablos or Black Diablos’ habitats.
- Mutation Type: Deviant
The Bloodbath Diablos is a faster, mutated version of the Diablos monster. It’s significantly stronger and has much more health than regular Diablos and Black Diablos, boasting maximum attack power and nearly maximum health. While its speed is similar to other Diablos, its defense is considerably lower – less than half of what the other versions have.
As a player who loves customizing my Diablos, I’m really excited that we can now check their specific elemental resistances right in the Stables! It’s super helpful to see exactly what each Bloodbath Diablo is strong and weak against when I’m gearing them up.
