Yuya Tokuda, the director of Monster Hunter Wilds, has acknowledged that the game might have been on the simpler side. Meanwhile, Ryozo Tsujimoto, who produces the Monster Hunter series, confirmed that they aren’t planning to end the series with this installment.
Seeing the list of nominees for The Game Awards 2025, I would have been surprised at the absence of Monster Hunter Wilds if you’d shown it to me last year – after my initial excitement about the new Donkey Kong game, of course. Monster Hunter Wilds seemed like a strong contender, but performance problems and lower-than-expected sales compared to Monster Hunter Rise have hurt its chances.
While the game’s performance received some criticism, many players also found it too easy. At the PlayStation Partner Awards 2025 Japan Asia – where it won both the Grand Award and User’s Choice Award – IGN Japan interviewed the game’s director and producer.
Tokuda noted that while the game is now more accessible to new and returning players who previously struggled, this may have made it a bit too easy for experienced players, resulting in a less challenging experience overall.
He pointed out that this ultimately benefited the team, explaining that Monster Hunter is a game designed for ongoing updates, and player feedback was crucial throughout that process. He believes fans’ input will be key to making Monster Hunter Wilds even better. He encourages players who finished the game right away to give it another try later on.
Despite the challenges with this game, the Monster Hunter series isn’t going anywhere. Producer Tsujimoto confirmed plans to continue the series and reach a wider audience. The team is also exploring ways to expand the Monster Hunter brand beyond just games, potentially including things like another movie or unusual collaborations, such as the recent guitar partnership.
