In Monster Hunter Worlds, relying solely on equipment with the highest damage figures may not always be the most effective strategy. For players who aren’t aiming for speed runs, there are numerous alternative build options available, including those that leverage unusual status effects such as Exhaust.
In the game MH Wilds, exhaust is not as widely recognized but equally important among the status ailments when compared to poison, paralysis, and sleep. Unlike these, exhaust isn’t associated with weapon stats or elemental damage types, but mastering its use can prove just as beneficial.
What is Exhaust in Monster Hunter Wilds?
In essence, Exhaust refers to a condition that makes monsters weary, making them more vulnerable to subsequent attacks. Upon activation, the target becomes staggered, enabling you to strike again. To determine if a monster is exhausted, look for visible signs of drooling. Additionally, an icon representing a drooling dinosaur will be displayed beside their icons on the map, signaling their current state.
When a monster is thoroughly tired, it will become noticeably slower and less hostile, and in certain instances, it may even lose the ability to execute specific moves. For instance, an exhausted Rathalos in Monster Hunter Worlds won’t be able to shoot fireballs; instead, it will emit smoke. The exhausted state usually persists for a brief period before the monster resumes its usual behavioral routines.
How to Exhaust Monsters
Exhaustion is accumulated by striking monsters with impact-type attacks, often referred to as Blunt damage. While not all weapons possess this ability, the Hammer is a notable example. If you manage to strike a monster with an impact attack, it will eventually tire and become Exhausted. Weapons capable of delivering impact damage or causing Exhaustion include:
- Hammer
- Hunting Horn
- Lance (Shield Bash)
- Sword and Shield (Shield attacks)
- Charge Blade (Guard Points, Impact Phials)
- Switch Axe (Impact and Exhaust Phials)
- Greatsword (Tackle, Side Blow)
- Insect Glaive (Blunt Kinsects)
- Bow (Arc Shot)
- Light Bowgun (Bash)
- Heavy Bowgun (Bash)
As a gamer, I discovered that whacking a beastie’s bonce with some good ol’ bludgeoning damage doesn’t just deal harm, but it also secretly fills a stun meter. Once this meter is full, the critter takes a tumble to the ground!
Certain projectile weapons can be equipped with specialized ammunition or coatings known as “Fatigue Ammo” or “Wear-and-Tear Coatings.” By striking enemies with these, you will inflict raw Fatigue damage, allowing you to exhaust monsters without the need for physical melee attacks using your weapon or employing the Bow’s Arc Shot technique.
These weapons, specifically the Charge Blade and Switch Axe, excel in draining monster energy, provided you attack with moves that release Impact or Exhaust Phials.
- Charge Blades deal Phial damage when using Axe Mode’s Circle/B/RMB attacks and either of its Elemental Discharge attacks.
- Switch Axes deal Phial damage in Sword Mode when the weapon’s Amp Gauge is full.
Exhaust Skills
The “Stamina Thief” ability enhances the rate at which Exhaust is accumulated through your offensive actions. However, it’s essential to employ attacks that generate Exhaust in order to utilize this ability effectively. If Exhaust is a key aspect of your gameplay strategy, then this skill is the most beneficial option for you.
Previously, during Monster Hunter games, the Punishing Draw skill also inflicted Exhaust damage alongside the stun, even though its description specified only stun. It’s possible that this continues in MH Wilds, but it hasn’t been definitively confirmed yet.
