If you’ve been tackling additional tasks in Monster Hunter Wilds, you may have encountered Kanya, an NPC who spends her time fishing at a camp base. She is the one responsible for assigning your fishing side quests, and her final assignment requires catching a Grand Escunite. This guide will walk you through the steps to catch a Grand Escunite, its ideal fishing spots, suitable bait, and the location where I most frequently observed it spawning. Rest assured that there won’t be any story spoilers in this guide; however, please be aware that some location details for maps beyond the initial one will be disclosed, so keep that in mind.

What is the Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds

Escunites are armored beings who protect their bodies from danger by hiding, yet they utilize tentacles to capture their prey. Notably, the Grand Escunite is a seldom-encountered creature in the underwater world of Monster Hunter Wilds.

Where is the Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds

During my exploration, I discovered the Grand Escunite hidden within the Scarlet Forest in Sector 8, or the Underground Cave. It would be beneficial for you to establish a camp nearby if you haven’t already, as it simplifies finding the Grand Escunite and there’s an abundance of ore to collect around the area. I’ve placed a marker on the map below to indicate its location.

How to catch a Grand Escunite in Monster Hunter Wilds 

If you’ve been keeping up with Kanya’s storyline, involving her goldenfish, you’ve probably received the side mission or quest named “Razzle Dazzle” from her. After accepting it, head to the specified location and ensure that you set the time for either Evening or Nighttime, and the season as Plenty when you take a break at camp. This method is most effective in making the monster appear according to my tests. I managed to catch two of them within minutes today using the Evening time and the Area 8 camp shown earlier.

After identifying it as a Grand Escunite (not a common one), select the Tentalce Jig bait by navigating up or down on the directional pad. The Grand Escunite won’t swallow the bait instantly. Instead, use the left joystick to move the line up and down, or quickly reel in (indicated at the top right of the screen). Once it bites, just press ‘RT’ or ‘R2’ based on your controller.

After chatting with Kanya, she instructs you to find a Grand Escunite. To do so, simply head to the indicated location and capture it. Once captured, return to Kanya at the Scarlet Forest base camp and have another chat with her to finish the side task or mission.

What is the difference between a Grand Escunite and a normal Escunite

Although they may appear identical underwater, it’s worth mentioning that the Grand Escunite exhibits a more radiant pearlescent sheen compared to the common Escunite, which seems rather ordinary. I’ve provided a comparison image to help illustrate this difference. In my observations, even the common Escunites seem scarcer than the Goldenfish during spawning.
