However, revisiting this story in today’s context could prove to be an exciting prospect for both fans of the original and new audiences alike.

There’s been a variety of responses to the animation studio’s latest plans to produce both _Toy Story 5_ and _Incredibles 3_. Some fans question whether these sequels are essential or simply money-making ventures. They fear that these upcoming films might tarnish some poignant moments, such as Woody saying goodbye to his friends at the end of _Toy Story 4_. Perhaps Pixar could instead offer audiences a long-awaited follow-up to their beloved _Monsters, Inc._ series.

Mike And Sullivan’s Human World Adventure Was Canceled

Instead of creating a prequel set during the monsters’ college years, Pixar almost produced an alternate Monsters, Inc. movie. This potential sequel to the 2001 film focused on Mike and Sulley transitioning into careers as comedians, with events like Mike’s wedding to Celia and Sulley reuniting with an older Boo. The title of this follow-up was Monsters, Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise, and it was once under active development. In this sequel, Mike and Sulley would have found themselves lost in the human world, but unfortunately, it was never produced. However, the story remains just as thrilling.

The scrapped Monsters, Inc. sequel was being developed by Circle 7 Animation, a division established by former Disney CEO Michael Eisner within Walt Disney Animation Studios in 2004. This division aimed to independently produce Pixar films as the relationship between Disney and Pixar started to falter. Unfortunately, Circle 7 was closed down before completing any of its projects, hence earning the nickname “Pixaren’t.” Some concepts were salvaged: Finding Nemo 2 transformed into Finding Dory, Toy Story 3 underwent a rewrite, and Monsters, Inc. 2 was replaced by Monsters University.

In the year 2005, Disney mulled over around 30 to 40 concepts for “Monsters, Inc. 2”, eventually settling on writers Rob Muir and Bob Hilgenberg. Their story is renowned within Disney as one of the top unrealized screenplays in their collection. To develop their plot, these writers frequently revisited the original “Monsters, Inc.” film to determine what transformations had occurred by the movie’s end. In a July 2021 interview with Hemmas Studios, Rob Muir disclosed details about the abandoned project.

Each culture boasts its own mythical beasts – Bigfoot, the Loch Ness Monster, the Jersey Devil, and the Chupacabra. This idea sparked enthusiasm within our team when we presented it. Our aim was to create fresh characters while ensuring everything remained rooted in the universe of Monsters, Inc..

In the sequel, Mike and Sulley found themselves stranded in the human world, right before Mike’s wedding to Celia. Throughout their journey, they encountered outcast monsters such as the Jersey Devil and El Chupacabra, all while searching for Boo and attempting to return home. At this stage, the production was just getting underway, with no director yet assigned. The pitch played a significant role in shaping the film’s course, but unfortunately, it came after the leadership at the studio had already changed.

Sulley & Mike’s Lives After Monsters, Inc.

Writer Rob Muir proposes that the Pixar sequel film “Lost in Scaradise” is set some time after “Monsters, Inc.“. In this scenario, Sulley serves as CEO, having replaced the nefarious Waternoose, while Mike has become a renowned comedian. As Mike gets ready for his belated wedding to Celia, Sulley worries that marriage might alter their friendship. To recapture old memories, Sulley proposes a trip to Boo for her birthday, which would require venturing into the human world.

A Visit To Boo Goes Wrong

Upon their arrival, they discover an elderly woman in her bed, indicating that Boo’s family has relocated. In the process of trying to leave, Mike and Sulley unintentionally shut the closet door, trapping themselves. The urgency arises as Mike risks missing his wedding if they don’t return promptly, causing Celia to depart. Desperate for a solution, they surreptitiously enter other children’s rooms in search of a portal still linked to Monstropolis, but all are found to be closed.

Trapped In The Human World

During their adventure, Mike and Sulley’s predicament piques the interest of Simon, a man with an intense fascination for monsters who happens to be able to see them, unlike most adults. They also discover a comic book featuring Randall, a banished lizard-like creature, and decide to locate him. Initially, he hesitates to assist due to past grievances, but eventually reconsiders and shares information about a secret island hidden within the Bermuda Triangle, where they might find a monster capable of reopening the portal.

Unlikely Monster Allies Help Them Return

On the island, Mike and Sulley encounter legendary beasts such as the Jersey Devil, El Chupacabra, the Loch Ness Monster, the Mongolian Death Worm, and the Abominable Snowman. The sequel to Pixar’s Monsters, Inc., titled Monsters, Inc. 2, unfolds as an action-packed quest to ensure Mike makes it back in time for his wedding, while also providing a heartwarming reunion and goodbye between Boo and Sulley.

Will Pixar Ever Make Monsters, Inc. 2?

Eisner’s approach during the talks with Pixar displeased Disney shareholders, ultimately resulting in his termination as CEO. His replacement, Bob Iger, swiftly reconciled the situation, not only striking a deal with Pixar but also purchasing the studio. Once reunited, Disney decided to close Circle 7 Animation and abandon the project “Monsters, Inc. 2: Lost in Scaradise”. Instead, Pixar opted to produce a prequel, considering that reintroducing Boo required an exceptional narrative – one they felt unprepared to create at the time. In a June 2024 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Monsters, Inc.’s director and Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter expressed his thoughts on a possible sequel.

Initially, it’s crucial that we discover something truly captivating, our top priority. Ideally, this concept would resonate with the audience, but so far, we’ve been struggling to find such a gem. We’ve been brainstorming ideas for a Monsters, Inc. sequel for quite some time now, yet we haven’t found enough substance to begin working on it just yet.

Even though Monsters, Inc. 2 was not produced, Disney and Pixar delved into the story’s aftermath through the Disney+ series called Monsters at Work. This show highlights how Monsters, Inc. shifts from terror to humor-based energy. Unlike Mike and Sulley, the series primarily focuses on a new character named Tylor Tuskmon. Both Monsters University and Monsters at Work have been well-received, leading to no present plans for Monsters, Inc. 2.
