More Details Leak About Ubisoft’s Rumored Multiplayer Shooter

According to recent leaks, Ubisoft is developing a new multiplayer shooter. Even though some of their recent games haven’t sold as well as they hoped, Ubisoft remains a major player in the video game industry. They’ve created many popular multiplayer games, including titles like Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege, Ghost Recon: Wildlands, and The Division 2.

Reports began circulating in April that Ubisoft is creating a new multiplayer shooter designed to rival Apex Legends. The game, internally known as Scout, has been in development for about two years. It’s so heavily influenced by Apex Legends that developers actually used an Apex Legends image as a placeholder while working on it.

Details Emerge About Ubisoft’s Apex Legends Competitor

More information about Ubisoft’s potential new game, Project Scout, has surfaced online thanks to leakers 6leaksgg and Shiny77. Shiny77 suggests the game is likely being built with Unreal Engine 5 and will take place in a science fiction world. It’s expected to be a large-scale, competitive multiplayer first-person shooter with crossplay, meaning players on different platforms will be able to play together. 6leaksgg confirmed these details and also shared some early screenshots. Interestingly, Shiny77, who has seen some gameplay footage, cautiously stated, “It’s… different. I don’t think everyone will be happy with it.”

Project Scout isn’t Ubisoft’s first attempt at a battle royale game. Back in 2020, their Montreal team released Hyper Scape, a free-to-play shooter with battle royale features. It let up to 100 players compete in a shrinking arena. However, Hyper Scape is now considered a major failure, as it couldn’t attract enough players and was shut down in 2022, just under two years after it launched.

It seems Ubisoft once explored the battle royale genre extensively, with reports suggesting they had around 12 different projects in development. An employee mentioned in early 2023 that the company was still interested in capitalizing on the popularity of these types of games. However, Ubisoft canceled seven games, including Splinter Cell VR and Ghost Recon Frontline, in late 2022. Several other projects were also likely considered for cancellation, many of which were battle royale games. This shift appears to have been driven by a noticeable drop in the number of players enjoying battle royale titles.

Project Scout could be Ubisoft’s newest try at creating a successful battle royale game. However, it will be difficult to compete with popular games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Call of Duty: Warzone. Ubisoft needs to find a unique feature to make its game stand out. The potential failure of Project Scout is similar to what happened with Sony and Firewalk Studio’s Concord – even though Concord wasn’t a battle royale, it shows what can happen when a game enters a crowded market without offering something truly new. Hopefully, Ubisoft has learned from past mistakes – its own and those of other companies – and will deliver a fresh and innovative game in a genre that many feel has become stale.
